SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SANDAG and Caltrans opened a southbound Interstate 5 auxiliary lane in the University City area.The new exit-only lane allows motorists to enter the freeway from Genesee Avenue and continue directly to the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp without having to merge with freeway traffic.The approximately half-mile auxiliary lane is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and increase overall safety in the area. Prior to its completion, the heavily trafficked southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive often caused congestion on the freeway, posing a safety risk to motorists.Construction for the I-5/Genesee Avenue Auxiliary Lane project began in July 2019 and required careful work alongside freeway traffic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian near a Logan Heights intersection.The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, east of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 94, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was walking westbound in the left-turn lane of Imperial Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Imperial, Buttle said.ABC 10News learned the victim was dragged several yards; the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray two-door sedan, fled the scene without stopping.No description of the driver was immediately available.The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation launched a project Thursday to build an Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater with permanent seating in the cemetery's assembly area.The foundation, which sponsors the Avenue of Flags as well as the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon and the annual veterans' services at the cemetery, is working with cemetery leadership and the VA's National Cemetery Administration on the design of the amphitheater.The VA-required construction of the amphitheater and maintenance endowment are expected to cost between 0,000 and 0,000 -- the largest project the Support Foundation has yet undertaken at Miramar National Cemetery.
