BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's restrictions on rare earth industry will assist in protecting the environment, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said here Saturday."Mass-extraction of rare earth will cause great damage to the environment, that's why China has tightened controls over rare earth production, exploration and trade, " Chen told media during the third China-Japan high-level economic dialogue.He said what China had done was also consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization.China is the largest producer of rare earth elements, which are used in hybrid car motors, computer hardware and components for high-tech products.Chen said the restriction policy would also have an adverse impact on the Chinese market, where parts for Japanese products were assembled.He stressed that in order to protect the country's environment, China had no choice but to take such measures.During the dialogue, Chen also called on Japan to ease high technology export controls to China and simplify visa procedures for Chinese business people.Japan had expressed concerns over China's export of mineral resources, independent innovation systems and information security policies during the meetings.Chen said, through the dialogue, that the two sides had enhanced communications and increased mutual understanding over these issues.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day U.N. visit this week has been fruitful as a major diplomatic effort at a time when new changes are emerging in the world economy and politics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Friday.Wen was in New York from Tuesday to Thursday for the U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 65th session of the U.N. General Assembly, a summit of the U.N. Security Council member states, and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and MDGs. He also met with U.S. President Barack Obama on bilateral ties and regional and world issues, calling for more cooperation.Yang said Wen made the New York trip as the world economy stabilized and started to show improvement but the recovery remained unbalanced and was still not solid.The international community has, in general, made significant progress on meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the minister said. he said, however, more imminent is the imbalance in international development and there are new challenges in international cooperation and development.The developing countries want more attention from the international community on the development issue, the minister said, and countries are ever more willing to promote peace, development and cooperation. BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Thursday it would urge industrial enterprises to produce high-quality products as part of the effort to enhance the image of "made in China."The Ministry would also draw up a blacklist displaying the names of those firms breaching quality-related regulations, said Li Yizhong, Minister of the MIIT.The MIIT would reward those companies that have good records for producing quality products with increased policy and funding support, and punish those with poor quality-control records, said Li at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.The MIIT would also move forward on a campaign to allow enterprises to make promises on producing quality products, and work together with quality supervision authorities to incorporate the quality-based credit system of enterprises into the whole social credit system, Li said.During the forum, 156 Chinese firms signed a written proposal "promising to make quality products for the world," and called upon their peers in China to raise the quality of industrial products.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Monday China hopes to work with Norway to boost bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Xi told visiting Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Stoere he hopes the two countries will expand cooperation in areas such as shipping, fisheries, energy, environmental protection and the Arctic.Xi said as long as the two nations respect each other and especially respect each other's core interests and major concerns, China-Norway relations will develop in a healthy way.Stoere expressed appreciation for China's achievements in social and economic progress, saying that the Norwegian government will increase cooperation with China in politics, economics, culture, science and technology, energy and finance.Norway hopes to sign a free trade agreement with China, Stoere added.Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Stoere earlier Monday.
