Thieves plant skimming devices at gas stations and ATMs to steal your card info, but according to Delray Beach Police Detective Kimberly Mead, that is only half the battle scammers face.Next, they need to find a card with a magnetic stripe to hold the information."Anything that has a magnetic stripe on the back can be turned into a credit card,” Mead told WPTV. “Hotel keys, gift cards, gas station cards, anything that has a magnetic stripe."This includes lost, stolen and seemingly useless cards thrown away in the trash.“They are just going to be a piece of plastic to someone, but if [scammers] have a credit card number, which they obtained through the internet or from a skimming device, they can input that information onto the magnetic stripe [using a card reader],” Mead said. “Now that card is useful to them again.”Recently, Mead busted a Florida man for reprogramming credit cards with stolen information. “We see this quite frequently,” Mead said.In her most recent case, Mead says she was tipped off when the credit card number on the receipt didn't match the numbers written on the front of the card.Then, using the same type of card reader thieves use to re-encode magnetic stripes, Mead checked the internal data on the man’s credit cards. “When we swiped the magnetic stripe, the number that showed up on the screen did not match the number that was embossed on the front [of the cards],” she said.So what can you do? “This kind of activity goes hand-in-hand with skimming,” the Florida detective said. “Pay attention to the ATMs you’re using, the gas pumps you’re using.”Actively monitor your charges through online and mobile banking apps, and think twice before tossing any card with a magnetic stripe.“Cut it up or shred it,” Mead said. “Don’t just toss it in the trash.”Anyone can purchase a credit card reader. Conditions aren’t ideal for tactical training, but trainee Teresa Fast is pushing through. "There's definitely winds, or rains, or whatever is out there,” she says. “We just work through it. It definitely makes you tough."Fast is among the hundreds of people each year who graduate and become U.S. border patrol agents. But before that happens, agents must first pass the coursework at CBP Border Patrol Academy, located in the desert of southern New Mexico, where they're whipped into shape.The agents are trained on real-work scenarios, like safely ending a vehicle pursuit. These types of situations were the focus of the academy's overhaul about a year ago, when the school switched over from a classroom 3-month curriculum to a more hands-on regimen that lasts 6 months. "The students actually see some of the things they will encounter in the field, so getting out of the classroom and making it scenario-based,” explains Deputy Chief Carlos Ortiz with the academy. Other scenarios include vehicle stops and interrogations, which are usually practiced in Spanish, a language they all have to learn. "You have to be a strong and willing person to be able to be out there day in day out,” Ortiz says. And 47-year-old Richard Douglas is willing and up for the task. Douglas was a border agent two decades ago, before moving over to Homeland Security after 9/11. He says now is a good time to return to the border. "The border patrol has made a big push to increase their numbers, and it was a really good time to come back for me,” Douglas says. CINCINNATI — The FBI and a handful of police departments are working to verify a boy's story that he was abducted years ago, with police in Illinois saying he may be a boy who's been missing since 2011.Timmothy Pitzen is also the name of an Aurora, Illinois boy who has been missing since 2011. He was 6 at the time and would now be 14.The child told police he was being held in a Red Roof Inn somewhere in the Cincinnati area, but couldn't say which one, according to the police report. He said he escaped and kept running. He apparently crossed a bridge into Kentucky, the police report states. The boy described the kidnappers as two white males with body-builder type builds. One had black curly hair and was wearing a Mountain Dew shirt and jeans and had a spider web tattoo on his neck. The other was short with a snake tattoo on his arms. They were driving a white newer model Ford SUV with yellow transfer paint, Wisconsin plates and a dent on the left back bumper.An FBI spokesperson in Louisville said they're working with Newport, Kentucky police, Cincinnati police, the Hamilton County (Ohio) Sheriff's Office and Aurora, Illinois police on a missing child investigation.Multiple police agencies said they'd been told to check Red Roof Inns in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. Workers at several area hotels said authorities had spoken to them and/or requested their guest lists.Law enforcement sources close to the investigation said they're working on positively identifying the boy.
