BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- People are often recommended to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, but only a minority people take the advice. A new research may motivate more people to do so.BBC reported a new study Tuesday that found eating lots of vegetables and fruits can weaken the effect of a gene variant called 9p21, which is reported to be one of the strongest predictors for heart disease, thereby reducing risks of heart disease.The researchers from McMaster and McGill universities studied the diets of more than 27,000 people around the world, including Europe, China, and Latin America.They found that people with the high-risk gene appeared to have a similar risk of heart disease as people with a low-risk variant of that gene after consuming a diet with a healthy amount of vegetables and fruits.But how diet has such an effect on the gene was unknown, said Dr. Sonia Anand, a lead author of the study published in PLoS Medicine journal.Anand added, "Despite having a high genetic risk for heart disease, a healthy lifestyle can actually turn off the gene."The message here is very clear, eating plenty of vegetables and fruits is definitely good to people's heart health, according to BBC.

This is the message the Fiji Cancer Society is sending out this October, which is breast cancer awareness month, worldwide.Fiji Cancer Society Chairperson and breast cancer awareness month President Nirmala Nambiar said, "Fiji continues to have a high incidence of breast cancer deaths with large number of tumors presented to health professionals at a late stage due to the stigma of having the disease."In the first quarter of 2011, there were 46 new breast cancer cases recorded, whilst there were 33 new cases in the same period last year."The figures could be scary but one must understand that as the awareness increases in our communities the number of cases recorded increases," she warned.Men and women should be aware that age, obesity and family history are all factors that contribute to the risk of developing the disease.This October the Fiji Cancer Society has planned a number of events all targeted to raise awareness since the lack of information and education is dangerous.Nambiar said through partnership with the Ministry of Health, Oxfam Clinic in Suva and the Fiji Nurses Association, supported by the sponsorship of Colgate Palmolive, the focus this year is on reaching out to the rural community and making a difference to the lives of the poor and unprivileged."We have free checkups planned for the month at the major villages from Vunidawa, Korovou and Valelevu to Lami at the other end and hope that we will be able to support the women in this area who may not be able to have a check- up otherwise.According to the official, the society's western branch continues to arrange free check- ups with the support of the Patan Clinic.The awareness and free checkups have also been arranged for corporate organizations at their request and if we are not able to provide all this during October we will continue to schedule them for the following month.The Society's thanks go to Suva Private Hospital for offering half price mammograms for the month of October, Nambiar said, adding a common issue with Fiji women, according to doctors at the hospital, was the return rate."Once they hear the news that they have cancer, many women don' t return because of the fear of what's next. The fog has almost all lifted. Only some local lines in Shanxi province have been blocked by snow. Road transport in the country's other regions is normal," Dong said.The screen showed that some work staff at local toll stations in Shanxi were clearing away the snow, while vehicles were running smoothly despite rain on a section of the Shanghai-Kunming Highway located in eastern Jiangxi province.About 840,000 passenger cars were put into service to meet the day's road travel demand, MOT Spokesman He Jianzhong said at the center. BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority said Wednesday that most parts of China will continue to be in the grip of cold with temperatures remaining low over the next few days.Snowy weather is forecast to continue in the country's southern regions, and freezing rain is expected to hit parts of Guizhou and Hunan provinces, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement on its website.Parts of the country's northwest areas expected to see light snow or drizzle.Meanwhile, fog will shroud most parts of the country's southern areas Wednesday morning, reducing visibility in parts of Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces to less than 1,000 meters, while smog is forecast to hit some areas of Jiangsu Province, according to the statement.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will donate one million U.S. dollars to quake-hit Turkey, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu announced Friday.Jiang said that China has paid great attention to the situation since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on Sunday.Jiang noted that Premier Wen Jiabao sent a message of condolence to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately after the quake.The Red Cross Society of China has also donated 50,000 U.S. dollars, and China will continue to offer emergency relief aid to Turkey, she added.According to the Turkish government, as of Friday morning, 570 people were dead and 2,250 injured after the powerful earthquake struck the province of Van in eastern Turkey on Sunday.
