SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Lemon Grove man who aimed a laser pointer at a San Diego police helicopter during a police protest this summer is facing a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison following his conviction by a federal jury, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.Rudy Alvarez, 25, was found guilty by a jury in San Diego federal court late Wednesday for shining a laser at the SDPD chopper around 8:30 p.m. June 4 in the area of 500 University Ave.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Alvarez shined the laser at the chopper multiple times over the course of an hour as he marched with protesters through downtown San Diego.The count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a 0,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 22.U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer called the result "a very important verdict" and said "This kind of crime could have a disastrous impact if a pilot's sight is compromised. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials and homeless advocates announced an expansion Tuesday of the city's program to establish safe parking lots for residents who live out of their cars or recreational vehicles.Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilman Scott Sherman and representatives of Jewish Family Service of San Diego jointly announced that the city will make a parking lot in Mission Valley near SDCCU Stadium available to vehicles in the next 45 days.The lot, which will also have supportive services for homeless residents, like job training, financial education and housing assistance, has space for up to 80 RVs or 200 regular cars and trucks.Jewish Family Service oversees the two existing parking lots and will do the same at the third, which is located near the intersection of Friars Road and Mission Village Drive.RELATED: San Diego program to provide safe parking for homeless living in vehicles"Often when someone becomes homeless for the first time, they end up living in their car and don't know where else to turn," Faulconer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday reported seven more deaths in San Diego County due to influenza complications last week, bringing this flu season's death toll to 42.The seven residents were between the ages of 53 and 90 and all had additional medical issues. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications.The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. County health officials touted the data in the weekly flu report as evidence that the current flu season may still be cresting."Influenza is still widespread in the region and continues to sicken San Diegans," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Anyone who has not yet had a flu vaccine this season should get it now."County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions.
