PYONGYANG, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Il, met visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday to highlight the warm ties between the two neighboring countries.     At the meeting, Xi conveyed Chinese President Hu Jintao's greetings to Kim. He also congratulated the leader on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK, wishing it even more and greater achievements in the future.     Kim, who is the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the National Defence Commission, asked Xi to convey his greetings to President Hu, general secretary of the the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He is also scheduled to visit Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Yemen.     Kim once again expressed condolences over the loss of life in the severe earthquake in China's Sichuan province. He praised the courageous deeds of the CPC, the Chinese government, the armed forces and the people of China during the rescue mission. He also proposed the two countries strengthen coordination on regional and international issues of common concern.     Kim said the DPRK-China friendship is an invaluable heritage handed down by the previous generations of revolutionaries of either nation. BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee recently held a forum to solicit opinions and suggestions from non-Communist personages on the documents of its latest plenary session held late last week.     CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao briefed the leaders of the non-Communist parties, leaders of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and persons without party affiliation on what was considered when forming the document. He asked them to raise suggestions on its revision.     Some delegates made remarks, approving the summary made by the CPC Central Committee on the experiences of the 30 years of rural reform and development and supporting the guideline thinking, objectives, principles and measures of rural reform and development.     They raised suggestions on the overall plan of urban and rural development, farmland protection, grain security, spread of agricultural technology and rural financial system reform, as well as on deepening cross-Strait agricultural exchanges and cooperation and improving grassroots democracy.     After hearing the opinions, Hu said the suggestions were valuable and reflected the in-depth thinking of the participants. Relevant departments would conscientiously study and adopt them.     He added China was an agricultural country with the majority of its population in rural areas. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The quake relief headquarters of the State Council (cabinet) Tuesday sent a congratulatory telegram to the Tangjiashan lake emergency rescue headquarters for the successful drainage of the quake lake.     "After more than 10 consecutive days of hard work, you successfully drained the Tangjiashan quake lake and eliminated a huge threat of secondary disaster after the May 12 quake," the telegram said. (Xinhua Photo)Photo Gallery>>>    "Your work has ensured the people's security, avoided a huge loss and created a miracle in dealing with large quake-formed lakes," it said.     "The State Council quake relief headquarters would like to express heart-felt gratitude and respect to the troops, geologists and quake and weather technicians working at the front line and those who helped evacuate people in low-lying areas," it said.     The headquarters urged people to continue the work until they were done with follow-up activity in terms of drainage and evacuations.     The Tangjiashan lake was formed after quake-triggered landslides from Tangjiashan Mountain blocked the Tongkou River running through Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in the quake that struck southwestern Sichuan Province.     Had the lake overflowed, it could have threatened some 1 million people on the lower reaches of the lake.     A man-made spillway started to drain the lake on Saturday morning and military engineers used recoil-less guns, bazookas and dynamite on Sunday and Monday to blast boulders and other obstructions in the channel and speed up the outflow.     The lake shrank dramatically on Tuesday as muddy water flowed into the low-lying areas.     About half of the lake's 250 million cubic meters of water has been discharged since the drainage started.     More than 250,000 people in low-lying areas of Mianyang were relocated under a plan based on the assumption that one-third of the lake volume breached the dam.
