SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former gang member who killed San Diego Police officer Archie Buggs in 1978 was granted parole suitability Thursday.Jesus Cecena was 17 years old when he opened fire on Officer Buggs during a traffic stop in Skyline. According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point blank range. The officer died on the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His term was later modified, due to a change in law making him eligible for Youth Offender Parole.Cecena has been denied parole at least 13 times. After that period, the Governor will have 30 days to uphold, reverse, modify, send it to the full Board of Commissioners for another review, or take no action.The parole review period will end in January 2019, after the end of Governor Jerry Brown's term, leaving the decision in the hands of his successor. 1609

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who jumped on stage during a Taylor Swift concert and assaulted a security guard was charged Monday with a deadly beating in the Midway area, police said. Christian Ewing, 29, was charged for the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman, according to SDPD Homicide Lt. Anthony Dupree. Officers got a 911 call about an assault near the Interstate 5 overpass at 3900 Rosecrans St. the evening of Dec. 5. A witness said a victim was on the ground and another man was hitting him with an object, investigators reported. He died three days later of his injuries. The suspect fled the scene, police said.Ewing was arrested on Dec. 21 for a parole violation and rebooked Monday on suspicion of murder. In 2015, Ewing jumped on stage at Petco Park as Taylor Swift was performing. Swift’s personal security guard, David Durkin, told Ewing he was not allowed to be in the area. During a struggle, Ewing seriously injured Durkin. Prosecutors previously said Ewing had several arrests in multiple states, an active warrant for a theft-related offense out of Florida, and a felony conviction for transporting drugs from out-of-state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now visible on a downtown San Diego street.Over the weekend, various Black Lives Matter banners were put up on Broadway, between Third Avenue and Kettner Boulevard.The banners showcase the work of San Diego-based artist Anthony Tyson, and they display the message that Black lives of every age, gender, preference, past, and future matter.“You know, not that many people of my color, of my ethnicity is around this area. So, my people can come down and see it, and then also you have people that are used to this area seeing something different. And it gets them to ask the question of ‘what is this?’ and that's all you really need at the end of the day,” Tyson told ABC 10News.Tyson collaborated with the nonprofit Downtown San Diego Partnership for the project.“The Downtown Partnership believes strongly in its duty to ensure organizational efforts are promoting equality and addressing systemic injustice and racial discrimination wherever they exist.
