BOULDER CREEK, Calif. (AP) — When a massive wildfire swept through California’s oldest state park last week, it was feared many trees in a grove of old-growth redwoods may have finally succumbed. Some of the state’s redwoods are around 2,000 years old and among the tallest living things on Earth. But an Associated Press reporter and photographer hiked the renowned Redwood Trail at Big Basin Redwoods State Park on Monday and confirmed most of the ancient redwoods had withstood the blaze.Among the survivors is one dubbed Mother of the Forest. Most of the redwoods may have been spared, but the historic park headquarters was not. It and many small structures were destroyed by the blazes. The fire is still burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco.Laura McLendon, conservation director for the Sempervirens Fund, told The Associated Press that a great deal of work will need to be done to rebuild campground, clear trails and manage damaged trees, but Big Basin will recover. 1001

BALTIMORE, Md. -- On Thursday, Maryland will become the first state in the country to ban foam containers for all schools and restaurants in the state. Some counties throughout the Baltimore area have already made the move to ban Styrofoam. Baltimore County is not one of them, but some restaurants have already taken the initiative to go green.More eco-friendly to-go options at restaurants tend to be a little more expensive, but Styrofoam can't be recycled and doesn't break down, so it's considered an environmental issue. There is already a foam ban in Baltimore City, as well as Montgomery, Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. In addition to the foam ban on Thursday, Howard County is charging five cents for plastic bags in another effort to be sustainable. It's a lot less than the 0 fine that restaurants could face for violating the foam ban.The foam ban was originally planned for July, but because of the pandemic, state officials pushed it back to October to give restaurants a little more time to adapt. This story was originally published by Erin MacPherson at WMAR. 1094

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Florida Atlantic University's commencement ceremony scheduled for 5pm today has been canceled and the Student Union is being evacuated after the school received what law enforcement considers a credible threat. An FAU source tells WPTV that right as the ceremony was about to start, a note was found in a women's bathroom stuck to the mirror that contained a threat in reference to the graduation ceremony.Sean Brammer, Chief of FAU Police, would not specify what type of threat was issued, saying only that it was specific to the commencement. The school is considering different options on rescheduling the commencement ceremony, but have not announced their intentions yet.FAU Assistant Vice President Joshua D. Glanzer said "There were 462 students scheduled to participate in the ceremony. Every effort will be made to give these students the recognition they deserve." 900

BOSTON (AP) — “Full House” star Lori Loughlin will be sentenced to two months in prison after a judge accepted her plea deal with prosecutors for paying 0,000 in bribes to cheat the college admissions process. Her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, was sentenced earlier Friday to five months behind bars for his role in the college admissions bribery scheme. They pleaded guilty in May to paying half a million dollars to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither is a rower.Giannulli told the judge he takes full responsibility for his conduct and regrets the harm it is caused his family.Giannulli and Loughlin were among dozens of people arrested last year in the case dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues.” 787
