SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A local portable toilet rental company is charged with tampering with equipment on its trucks to skirt emissions regulations. Employees also allegedly faked some of the smog test results.Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner went to San Marcos’ Diamond Environmental Services on Friday afternoon, but was asked to leave. 10News was looking for answers to the alarming accusations that the company and some of its employees were committing crimes against the environment. Part of a video on the company’s website states, “Diamond's dedication to doing the right thing goes above and beyond.” Yet prosecutors say Diamond was preparing false smog test results to get passing results. Additionally, executives were allegedly tampering with emission control devices on its diesel truck fleet, re-programming the emission monitoring devices to avoid extra costs that come with burning off dirty, soot-filled diesel filters. Ed Rodriguez is the owner of Auto Park Smog in Escondido. He says, “If you’ve ever seen a vehicle going down the road, like a truck, and it has black smoke coming out of it, that’s all soot and that's not good.” Rodriguez says he's worked on Diamond's smaller trucks but not the ones that are part of this new six count federal indictment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that Diamond took the devices out of trucks and shipped them out of California to be re-programmed. Owner and manager Arie Eric De Jong III, manager Warren Van Dam and technician Jorge Leyva Rodriguez are facing time behind bars and thousands of dollars in fines.The company declined an interview during our visit to the headquarters on Friday afternoon. 1692

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Protesters dressed in salon gear took to the street outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home Thursday.In video of the protest, some demonstrators are seen with curlers in their hair, plastic is draped over them and hair dryers hang from trees.The rally came two days after video of Pelosi getting her hair cut inside a California salon surfaced.California Governor Gavin Newsom lifted restrictions on hair salons serving customers indoors at the end of last month. However, the city of San Francisco still requires such services to only be provided outside.Pelosi says the salon told her it would be OK to come inside, because they are only accommodating one person at a time.She also claims the whole thing was a set-up, since the video was released to the media by the salon's owner, KGO reports. A photo of Pelosi on the same visit shows her wearing a mask around her neck instead of on her face. She says that's because she had just had her hair washed. 1004

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are trying to determine if the gun in the officer-involved shooting was registered to the shooter.Around 1:30 Wednesday, police were called to a mobile home park in San Ysidro after getting reports of a man carrying a large gun. When they arrived, they ordered the man on the ground, and when he didn’t get down or put his gun down, they shot him several times.RELATED: San Diego Police shoot man in San Ysidro RV park10News was back on the scene today where neighbors told stories of what happened.One woman said she saw the man with the gun on his shoulder. She said he was saying he had already shot his woman. No women were injured in the incident.Before police killed him, he shot an RV with five children inside leaving bullet holes on the front. Neighbors say luckily no one was killed. One neighbor reported getting under her table during the gunfire. The name of the man police shot and killed hasn’t been released. 10News talked to his sons today. One of them said they didn’t want to talk about their dad, but that their mom was doing okay and they are not mad at police for shooting their father. SEATTLE — Add marine wildlife to the growing list of life affected by America’s opioid crisis.For the first time, scientists have detected traces of oxycodone in mussels near Seattle, KIRO7 reported. Biologist Jennifer Lanksbury explained whatever people eat and excrete — including opioids — end up in waterways.“It’s telling me there's a lot of people taking oxycodone in the Puget Sound area,” Lanksbury said. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officials extracted mussels from clean water and put them in urban areas they wanted to test for contamination. There was enough oxycodone in a Seattle-area bay for the mussels to test positive.The system that filters water catches a lot of contaminants, but it can’t specifically filter out drugs, Kings County Wastewater Management said.“Those are definitely chemicals that are out there in the nearshore waters and they may be having an impact on the fish and shellfish that live there,” Lanksbury said.The data was from a one-time study for prescription drugs in Washington’s waterways, but officials say they will try to get more funding to continue research. 1163

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Isaias snapped trees and knocked out power while blowing through the Bahamas on Saturday.The storm made landfall over Grand Bahama Island on Saturday. The Bahamas are still attempting to rebuild from Hurricane Dorian in 2019, a storm that killed dozens and caused heavy damage to the island chain. The storm will then head toward the Florida coast, where officials have closed beaches, parks and coronavirus testing sites.As of the 11 a.m. Sunday advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Isaias was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving north-northwest at 8 mph.Florida authorities say they've prepared shelters, but so far don't expect to have to evacuate people. Gov. Ron DeSantis says the most important thing now is to "remain vigilant.” The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the maximum sustained winds weakened slightly to 80 miles per hour Saturday morning as it moved toward the Florida coast.Current NOAA forecasts show that Isaias could make landfall near Florida's east coast on Sunday. Current models show the storm traveling up the Eastern Seaboard, brining heavy rains and winds to coastal areas of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina by early next week. 1232
