SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. She said the resort books up early, and owners need to reserve their week sometimes far in advance.Eaton said timeshares can work if you plan to go to the same resort year after year, but with so many options now available - including airbnb - it may be best to keep that 0.The county auction is online and runs from May 4 to May 9. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Immigration rights advocates in San Diego are worried about the impact of President Trump's promised mass deportation. In a pair of tweets Monday night, President Trump said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would next week "begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States."Benjamin Prado is the program coordinator for the U.S. Mexico Border Program with the American Friends Service Committee. Prado says the tweets are causing concern and confusion.“We’re not sure because of the tweets, they are just so random, and very limited in scope and depth," said Prado. ICE agents carried out an immigration crack down at the Zion Supermarket in Clairemont Mesa back in February. Twenty-six workers were detained. "Our communities have experienced all kinds of things, whether it be on transportation, roving patrols, that border patrol has done in the past,”said Prado. He said his members started watching their communities long before the president's latest tweet. "Our community members are mobilizing, have been mobilizing even before this tweet, and have been out in the community, making sure Immigration and Customs Enforcement doesn’t go and separate families," said Prado. Immigration attorney Edward Orendain said the enforcement action would likely target people who have skipped out on their hearings or who have been given final deportation orders. "Apparently, this is going to be targeted more toward people who already have outstanding deportation orders or orders of deportation. Initially, that may seem to be a good thing, but I know, because I have several clients, that a significant number of the people who already have final orders of deportation are under supervised release, which means local immigration already knows of them, but they’re allowed to stay in the United States usually for humanitarian purposes," said Orendain. Orendain says he has one client, who was given final deportation orders, but is on supervised release because she has an ill son who is a U.S. citizen. "She's been removed a couple of times, but she has a U.S citizen child who has severe medical and developmental issues and really can’t get the standard of care in his home country,so the government knows about her, knows that she has final orders of removal or deportation, but allows her to stay here as a humanitarian issue," said Orendain. It's estimated more than 200,000 undocumented workers are in San Diego County. Orendain said he hopes the president's tweet has more to do with politics than any actual plan. "Maybe it was a way to stoke the fires in his base, but because of the office that he holds, it has to be given attention." 2758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been 25 years since President Bill Clinton approved Operation Gatekeeper, the measure focused on the issue of immigrants crossing the border illegally — specifically the San Diego sector.Two key parts of Operation Gatekeeper were surveillance equipment and enforcement infrastructure, like walls and fences. Twenty-five years later, Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco tells 10News, "Before Gatekeeper this area was in utter chaos, agents were apprehending 1,000 per shift. We had hundred of thousands of apprehensions a year." It's a measure that Francisco says paved the way for Border Patrol today."It's absolutely night and day from where we were back then," Francisco said.Tuesday, those against Operation Gatekeeper held a rally. Former Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd tells 10News, "That was the whole purpose, to push them out here to make it more difficult and dangerous for them to cross. I didn't want to be a part of it but its something I have to admit I was a part of."Budd tells 10News, it's partly why she left Border Patrol, "I left because I felt the policies we were enacting were killing people and what we were representing to the public wasn't the truth." Meantime, Border Patrol agents say it's only helped increase San Diego safety."The days are gone where illegal aliens are running through people's backyards trying to hide from Border Patrol," Francisco added. Budd says, "We need them to work for us, we need them to protect our borders we need them to keep drug smugglers out, but we don't need children dying in their custody and all sorts of things they're doing right now." 1637
