From the value meals and dollar menus, fast-food restaurants know how to do it fast and cheap. However, over the past decade, prices have been slowly going up.Datassential, a research company studying restaurant menu trends, found median fast-food hamburger prices have jumped by 54 percent.   At McDonald’s, a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal will cost you almost . At Burger King, the Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger meal is almost . So, what’s behind the hike in prices?  Well, if you're a fan of places like Chipotle and Five Guys, that's why.A burger and fries at a Five Guys will cost you around . Casual restaurants like Five Guys have become so popular that fast-food joints like Burger King and McDonald’s realize consumers are willing to pay a few bucks more for food.  Additionally, fast-food workers are finally getting paid a bit more, so in order to offset that cost, chains are charging more for food. But despite the rise in prices, the chains still offer a quick meal and serve up great deals throughout the year. 1077

HINSDALE COUNTY, Colo. — As the first fingers of spring started to peel back winter’s hold in 1884, a man staggered out of the mountains and into Lake City, ready to spill a story — or two, or three — that few would believe. He’d quickly become known as the Colorado Cannibal. It’s a tale as puzzling as it is horrific, and somehow, from the safe distance of about 150 years, humor has wiggled its way in.His name was Alferd Packer.Recognize the name, or perhaps know his story? He became somewhat of a Colorado celebrity in the mid-1900s, when you could find the Packer name in everything from a wilderness cookbook title to a festival name to a musical created by CU Boulder students. People learned of his story and instead of turning away in disgust, they leaned into it. Unabashedly embraced it.An article from April 1984 in The Washington Post captured the absurdity in one of its opening paragraphs: “In the days before bean sprouts and granola, when the West was raw and men ate men, Packer chewed his way into the hearts of Coloradans by devouring five gold-seeking companions.”Of course, under the silliness is the much darker story of how those five men met their horrific demise in the freezing, lonely mountains. The particulars around what actually happened are foggy at best. Packer was the only one from the group to live to tell the tale and he told several. And those details are now buried — and in some instances, altered — under 150 years of history. To dig up what happened, we turned to the details in official court documents and the ink-smudged columns of the local newspapers, both from the late 1800s.These documents have preserved countless moments from the case, such as Packer’s statement about his alleged crimes as he stood in front of a courthouse packed with people who were no doubt fascinated that a cannibal was in their midst and wondering if he’d get his just desserts.Even in those moments, just before his sentencing, it was not absolutely certain if Packer had planned to eat the men through a twisted, murderous mind or if it just unfolded that way in an equally desperate and reluctant struggle for survival. But either way, he had surely bit off more than he could chew.Introducing Alferd Packer, Colorado’s CannibalPacker’s story starts in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. According to the April 20, 1883 edition of the Lake City Mining Register, he was born on Jan. 31, 1842, though other reports list his birthdate as Nov. 21 of that year. 2491

Hello! And welcome to Movie...Pass?MoviePass, the ticket subscription company, is buying Moviefone, the 29-year old movie directory service.A lot has changed since Moviefone first started. It's hard to imagine now, but people used to call a number for movie times. Moviefone became so popular that its famous "Welcome to Moviefone" greeting was parodied in a famous "Seinfeld" episode.Moviefone still has a website and app, but it retired the 777-FILM phone service in 2014. (Seinfeld's Kramer must be pleased. "Why don't you just tell me the name of the movie you've selected?")AOL, now part of Verizon, bought Moviefone in 1999 for 8 million. But MoviePass isn't spending nearly as much to get Moviefone. MoviePass majority owner Helios and Matheson Analytics will pay Verizon only about million for Moviefone -- million in cash and a mix of HMNY stock and warrants worth about million, according to a Securities and Exchange filing Thursday.According to Business Insider, MoviePass has also welcomed back service to a handful of AMC theaters in big cities, including San Diego. The service removed 10 of AMC's busiest locations from its app in January to take a "hard position" against theater chain. MoviePass has been seeking a a portion of concessions sales.WHY MOVIEFONE?So why does MoviePass want Moviefone? MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told CNNMoney it wanted access to Moviefone's film and TV show content."Our subscribers want to connect with Hollywood and hear more about what's going on in the film industry," Lowe said. "They'd like to have MoviePass recommend movies to them and Moviefone is iconic."Lowe, a co-founder of Netflix and former president of DVD rental kiosk service Redbox, added that he hopes the acquisition will be a "great funnel to attract new members" to MoviePass, which currently has more than 2 million subscribers.Ted Farnsworth, CEO of Helios and Matheson Analytics, added that the marriage of MoviePass and Moviefone will hopefully lead to more advertising revenue."MoviePass is growing at warp speed. Put it and Moviefone together and it gives us more advertising opportunities," Farnsworth said in an interview with CNNMoney. "This is a great strategic move for us."MoviePass arguably needs more ad sales to convince skeptical investors that its business model of buying tickets from theaters and then offering them to subscribers at a discount through monthly and annual subscription plans is viable for the long haul. MoviePass lets people see a movie a day for .95 a month -- it recently cut its price from .95.Shares of Helio and Matheson Analytics have plunged nearly 55% this year. Investors are worried that MoviePass won't be profitable anytime soon.THREAT OF COMPETITIONPart of the problem? We live in an era of so-called peak TV. Netflix, other streaming services and big cable TV networks are churning out more and more quality shows that eat into the time people have to go to movies.Investors also worry that the big chains that MoviePass currently buys tickets from -- AMC, Regal and Cinemark -- may eventually look to cut out MoviePass and launch their own subscription services or other lower-priced deals.Regal, which is now owned by UK-based Cineworld, has experimented with charging more for tickets during peak movie times and less at times when attendance tends to be lighter. Think of it as Uber-style surge pricing, but for movies. And Cinemark unveiled Movie Club, a monthly plan that lets people buy a movie ticket a month for a discounted price of .99, last year. That deal obviously isn't as good as the one a day plan offered by MoviePass. But Cinemark will also allow Movie Club members to roll over unused tickets every month, bring friends at the lower price and offers bargains on concession stand items.Lowe isn't too concerned about competition though. He said he's convinced that MoviePass will continue to work closely with the big chains -- even if Wall Street is nervous."We have to prove we are a driving force in getting more people into theaters. We have to try and put our money where our mouth is," he said. 4118

Governor Doug Ducey has announced a plan to give Arizona teachers a 20 percent pay increase by 2020.The developments come after more than a month of protests at the state Capitol and at schools across Arizona that were sparked by earlier teacher discontent in West Virginia and Oklahoma.Ducey’s plan would give teachers a 9 percent increase this year, with another 11 percent to come by 2020.Ducey said in his Thursday press conference the increase would bring the average teacher salary up to ,130 by 2020.Arizona teachers are among the lowest paid in the nation. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arizona elementary teachers earned a median wage of ,280 in 2017 and high school teachers ,470, the 3rd and 6th lowest in the nation, respectively. Adjusted for local cost of living, federal figures show elementary teachers actually rank 49th in earnings and high school teachers 48th.Teachers and others held "walk-ins" at more than 1,000 schools Wednesday to draw attention to their demands and the grassroots group had said a strike could be possible as a next step.House Speaker J.D. Mesnard earlier on Thursday outlined his own separate plan to boost teacher pay by 6 percent in the coming school year with annual increases that could lead to a 23 percent increase at the end of five years. However, his proposal does it by redirecting cash already committed or planned for school districts in coming years, so school districts would feel the squeeze.Take a look at the map below for average salary figures for school districts across the state. 1605
