CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after U.S. Customs and Border Protection says he tried to smuggle more than 200 pounds of liquid methamphetamine into the U.S. According to CBP, the 36-year-old man tried to enter the U.S. at the Calexico Port of entry Tuesday night around 11 p.m. The man was referred to a secondary inspection point when a K-9 alerted agents to the gas tank area. Upon further inspection, CBP discovered 222 pounds of liquid meth worth 6,000. “Drug trafficking organizations have one goal in mind, which is to get their product across,” said Officer in Charge, Sergio Beltran. “Concealing narcotics in gas tanks is one tactic and by utilizing our layered enforcement, we were able to stop this before it plagued our communities.”The man was arrested and the drugs and vehicle seized. 826

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - The first woman on the West Coast to graduate from the Howitzer Section Chief course is stationed at Camp Pendleton.The Howitzer is the largest land gun in the Marine Corps. As the section chief, Corporal Julianna Yakovac is in charge of the unit firing the gun.Yakovac broke the glass ceiling in February, graduating on Valentine's Day. Just a few days before that she turned 21. "She's the right person, in the right place, at the right time for this job," Lt. Col. Kenneth del Mazo, Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 11th Marines at Camp Pendleton, said she's the best fit for the job.RELATED: Marines hold largest exercise in Camp Pendleton history"She has earned her position 100 percent," he said he wouldn't send anyone through the course, which he added was a notoriously difficult course, unless they were ready.The Marine Corps opened up ground combat positions to women in 2016.Yakovac didn't even know it was a newly available position for her.Once she graduated, she was thrilled to meet her unit and get to work, saying it's important to be prepared. (AP) — The National Park Service says scientists are trying to determine the cause of death of an endangered whale calf that was found stranded on a beach on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.The young whale is considered to be “one of the rarest marine mammals” on earth, according to NPS.Biologists performed a necropsy on the North Atlantic right whale calf and took DNA samples Saturday.NPS at Cape Lookout National Seashore posted news of the whale’s death on its Facebook page.Right whales are critically endangered. CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida man is pleading for a thief to return a sentimental wedding gift that was stolen out of a family member's truck in Port Charlotte.Boomer Bass left for a fishing trip on Little Gasparilla Island last week, and thought it was best to leave his Springfield 1911 Range Officer Gun with a family member, rather than bring it with him.On April 19th, Bass's mother reported that the gun was stolen out of his truck in the Water's Edge neighborhood in Englewood. The gun holds sentimental value to Bass. "I had a gun very similar to this one when I was younger," he said. "I sold it to help a friend of mine out, and I really regretted selling that gun." With this in mind, his wife, Stefanie, made the decision to buy him that same gun on the morning of their wedding. They married in October of last year. "She went and bought that gun for me and gave it to me that night at our wedding reception, actually," Bass said. "I think the gun signified, really, that she understood the generosity I showed when I was younger, and she wanted to show me she would be the kind of wife that would do those things for me."Stealing a gun is a felony in the state of Florida. However, Bass says if the thief wants to return his gun, he would accept it with no questions asked. "Hopefully, you feel like you made a mistake. I will not prosecute, I will not pursue any legal action. All I want is this gun back," he said. Bass said he is willing to pay the retail price for a brand new gun if his is returned safely. (KGTV) — A large plume of smoke could be seen over Camp Pendleton on Wednesday, as fire crews battled the De Luz Fire.The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on the west side of De Luz Road, according to Camp Pendleton officials. It wasn't clear how large the fire was at the time, but officials say there was a threat to structures and precautionary evacuations were taking place for De Luz Housing and surrounding buildings, including the CDC, school, and NCIS locations. An evacuation location was set up at Paige Field House.Just before 2:30 p.m., officials said the fire's forward progress had been stopped.Officials cautioned that smoke can be seen in the surrounding area.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 754
