WASHINGTON (AP) — A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol has been removed.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam.Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol.The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue. WARNER SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A famous balloonist died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a balloon accident near Warner Springs over the weekend.According to his website, Julian Nott died after "multiple injuries from an extraordinary and unforeseeable accident." According to the site, Nott was flying an experimental balloon he invented that was designed to test high altitude technology.Nott was known as the founder of the modern ballooning movement. He broke 79 world ballooning records and 96 British records, including exceeding 55,000 feet in a hot air balloon.The accident happened Sunday around 12:40 p.m. in a remote area near Warner Springs a mile off Chihuahua Valley Road.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the balloon experienced a hard landing.A witness said the capsule detached from the balloon and rolled several hundred feet down the hillside.The two victims in the balloon at the time of the landing reportedly suffered back injuries. Both victims had to be airlifted out of the area.At this time, the condition of the other victim is unknown. 1097

(KGTV) — A pregnant mother who fell sleep at the wheel early Saturday morning crashed into a Vista building, causing an hours-long gas leak.San Diego Sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on South Santa Fe Ave., near Civic Center Dr., at a Battery World store.A family of five was in the SUV that crashed after the driver, identified as a 30-year-old pregnant mother by deputies, told deputies she fell asleep before she lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone pole, and crashed into the building.A 40-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a 9-month-old girl were in the SUV at the time of the crash. The driver sustained a bruise to her forehead. No one was seriously injured, deputies said. The family was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.The crash caused a gas leak in the damaged building. SDG&E crews have since fixed the leak. The utility company said the leak did not expose the neighborhood to dangerous levels of gas, but nearby residents were able to smell the gas.No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.S. WASHINGTON — Attorney General William Barr has told the Associated Press that the Justice Department has not uncovered widespread voter fraud that could have changed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.Barr told the Associated Press that federal agents have followed up on numerous complaints and tips they've received, but have found no evidence of widespread voter fraud.“To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election,” Barr told the AP.Barr's comments come as President Donald Trump continues to seek legal action to overturn election results in states won by president-elect Joe Biden. The Trump campaign has alleged widespread voter fraud in those lawsuits but has provided little evidence to prove the claim.The comments also come a month after Barr directed the Department of Justice to pursue any “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities in the days after the election.Barr, who has proven to be one of Trump's most staunch defenders in his current stint as Attorney General, questioned the security of mail-in ballots of the summer.
