SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The holiday shopping season may be more than a month away. But for retailers, now is the time to hire new talent. Researchers estimate Americans will spend more than 0 billion in retail this year, which means they need to staff seasonal workers ahead of the shopping rush. Macy’s announced they are looking for 80,000 seasonal workers. The Gap Company will hire 65,000 people. Target plans to add 120,000 seasonal team members this year, up 20% from last year. In San Diego County alone, Target plans to add 1,200 people to their staff this season. “I’m going full time at SDSU, and I knew that I was definitely looking for some work,” Elizabeth Gonzalez said. 10News Gonzalez at the Mission Valley Target’s hiring fair Saturday morning. She is hoping to spend her winter break as a Target sales associate.“I just needed some extra cash just to pay the bills,” Gonzalez said. She said she needed the cash to continue paying for college, as she studies to become a Physician’s assistant. “I thought Target would be a great opportunity because I love shopping here,” Gonzalez said. Companies like Target are offering seasonal hiring incentives to those who already love their stores. Target’s include a 10% employee discount, 20% off healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, and an hour, which is above the state minimum wage. After a morning of paperwork and interviews, Gonzalez found out she got the job.With the popularity of online shopping warehouses and shipping centers are hiring seasonal workers as well. So are delivery and logistics companies. UPS will hire 100,000 full and part-time employees, while FedEx plans to hire 55,000 workers this season. 1732

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is working to transform Little Italy into an outdoor dining experience. They're streamlining the process for shops and restaurants to serve more customers while promoting social distancing under a new outdoor dining and shopping proposal.Marla Encinas had to close her Little Italy clothing boutique, Valmare, for two months. "We tried to do online selling but its definitely not the same," said Encinas. But, for any business, fewer customers often means less revenue. The city of San Diego is trying to change that. On Thursday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced a proposal to waive fees and fast-track the permit process to bring restaurants and shops outdoors. "They’ll be allowed to maximize outdoor space to allow physical distancing and expand the number of customers they can serve," said Faulconer. "I think its going to be really cool to be outside in the open air and be able to bring out our business," said Encinas. With approved permits, businesses can set up tables and chairs or racks of clothes and other items on sidewalks, streets, and parking lots. "I would love to bring out summer stuff because the weather is so nice, people are starting to slowly go out."Last Saturday, Little Italy had their first al-fresco dining event on India Street. By adding retail shops in the mix, more businesses will get a much-needed chance to bounce back from Covid-19. "It's going to be very fun," said Encinas. "You’re going to have a bunch of different vendors, it's going to be different than your typical shopping experience."Businesses can apply for the outdoor dining permits on the city's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The boy who was critically injured in a crash in San Ysidro joined his parents Friday outside the courthouse where the alleged driver is on trial.Prosecutors said Constantino Banda Acosta, an undocumented immigrant, was drunk May 6 when he hit the Lake family on their way home from Disneyland.Lennox Lake was hospitalized for 18 days with multiple skull fractures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989
