SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Point Loma boy must now walk to and from school after a thief stole his custom BMX bike. San Diego Police need the public's help to find the man who took the boy's prized possession. BMX riding is 9-year-old Bradley Ramos' favorite pastime. It's a passion that runs in the family. His father, Aaron, dabbled it in as a child. So did Bradley's cousin, Tyler."This bike was actually his cousin's bike when his cousin was his age. Now his cousin is 21 years old, so the bike has been in the family for a while," Ramos said. That was, until Memorial Day morning. Bradley's mother noticed the bike was missing from their front porch."My bike and my helmet got stolen," Bradley said. The family's security camera captured a man walking away with Bradley's bike. The video shows the young man with arm tattoos wearing a hat and backpack. He looks to be wearing glasses and a distinctive white watch."It kind of sucks because I have to get rides to school now when usually, I'd ride my bike and it's way quicker," Bradley said. The bike theft is the second in as many weeks for the Ramos family. Last Monday, thieves made off with at least ,500 worth of tools from Ramos' work truck. "Since that's been happening, we've been bringing the bike in, and we didn't do it just that one night, and it was gone," Ramos said. The BMX bike has thin red wheels with a racing number plate in the front handlebars. It's not a common model, so the Ramos family is asking people to keep an eye out, and alert authorities if they spot it. To the man who made off with the Ramos' family heirloom, Bradley and his father have a stern message. "Give it back, and never come back to this neighborhood again," Bradley said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --A deported Army veteran who was pardoned by Governor Jerry Brown last year will now be allowed to become a U.S. citizen.Hector Barajas was honorably discharged but then deported to Mexico in 2004 after serving prison time for a shooting.  He had been waiting for news about his application for citizenship and learned Thursday that it had been approved. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 13 in San Diego. Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support house in Tijuana and has become an advocate for the roughly 350 other men and women in the same situation. "We don't condone criminal activity, I'm not proud of what happened but I am proud of my service, and I take responsibility for what happened. I went to prison, paid my debt to society and I don't think we should be deported, " Barajas told 10News via Skype Friday morning. Although he's looking forward to starting a new chapter, he says he is very much committed to carrying on the mission he started to help bring other deported vets home.  1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wednesday afternoon, San Diego tribal leaders announced the closures of county casinos amid the coronavirus outbreak. Tribal government leaders of the Barona Band of Mission Indians, Campo Kemeyaay Nation, Jamul Indian Village, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, and Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians all announced that they were closing casinos amid COVID-19. "The Tribes are united in this decision to close for the health and well-being of the community, their guests and approximately 9,000 employees. Despite this closure, it is their hope that they can continue to provide emergency services for their respective communities," officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Underused land owned by San Diego's Metropolitan Transit Service could help address the region's need for affordable housing — though not entirely.That's according to a new report by the think-tank Circulate San Diego, which suggests nearly 60 acres of MTS-owned land, including parking lots and structures, could better serve the community as new homes."Empty and underutilized parking lots are a stark and visible demonstration of public lands being underutilized. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues.The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991
