MALIBU (CNS) - The Woolsey Fire that has burned more than 85,500 acres, destroyed at least 177 homes and forced the evacuation of more than 265,000 people in Los Angeles and Ventura counties is also mobilizing the local animal rescue community, as volunteers scrambled to find shelter for thousands of small pets and large animals alike.Evacuation centers for animals at Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace and Pierce College in Woodland Hills quickly filled up after opening Friday. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say gunmen burst into an unregistered drug rehabilitation center in central Mexico and opened fire, killing 24 people and wounding seven.Police in the north-central state of Guanajuato said the attack occurred Wednesday in the city of Irapuato. Apparently, the attackers shot everyone at the rehab center. Three of the seven wounded were reported in serious condition.State police say nobody was abducted.Guanajuato is the scene of a bloody turf battle between the Jalisco cartel and a local gang.No motive was given in the attack, but Mexican drug gangs have killed street-level dealers at such facilities in the past. 666

MADRID (AP) — Restoration work on a sculpture in northern Spain has resurrected memories of a restored Christ fresco in another Spanish city that drew ridicule as well as tourists. The latest incident concerns a relief sculpture on the exterior of an office building in the city of Palencia. What was once the bust of a smiling woman now looks more like the head of a cartoon character. The disfigurement was bought to light by a local artist who posted before and after photographs on his Facebook page. The poorly done restoration drew immediate comparisons with an "Ecce Homo" fresco in Borja. MIDDLETON, Idaho — Fourteen staff members at Heights Elementary in Idaho have been placed on administrative leave after dressing up for Halloween in costumes many parents and locals are calling "offensive" and "racist."The teachers and other staff came under fire for dressing as a border wall and group of Mexicans on Halloween last week."They should have some kind of sensitivity training — some kind of interaction with other cultures because this — this is what they are passing on to the kids. So it's normalizing — for them — that these kinds of things are acceptable, when, in my opinion, they are not," said Kevin Vallejo, Boise resident.Middleton School District has now announced it is doing just that. Administrators said there will be an all-district staff meeting for cultural sensitivity training on Nov. 7. Officials said these kinds of training "will continue throughout this school year and at the start of each school year moving forward," according to the administration's release.The decision was announced Saturday at a special school board meeting where the announcement was made and then the school board went into executive session. The superintendent did not disclose the names of the employees involved.In response to the controversy, Mark Hopkins has been named principal at Heights Elementary “for now,” Middleton said. Hopkins began the year as principal of Purple Sage Elementary, according to Idaho Ed News. Board members participated in a nearly two-hour executive session before returning to open session and reading a statement condemning the employees’ actions.Photos of the employees posing in their costumes were originally posted on the school district's Facebook page and then later removed. MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida woman was arrested on Tuesday after deputies say six children in her care were living in some of the worst living conditions they've ever seen.Marion County, Florida Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Sara Nicole Resko, 30, after some of the children were found wandering in the street on Tuesday afternoon. Deputies say that a 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were found wandering in the road alone. The little girl was not clothed from the waist down and a witness provided a towel to the child so she could cover up. Deputies say they immediately saw that both children were infested with lice and covered with open sores.The little girl was in worse condition than the little boy, having multiple open sores on her arms, legs, chest, back, feet and face, deputies say.While deputies were trying to figure out where the two children came from, they saw more children riding bicycles down the roadway, later identified as the siblings of the two and 4-year-old.These children, ages 6, 8, 9 and 13, told deputies that Resko had left them alone at the home while she was at work.Deputies entered the home and found that there was no running water, no food and no electricity. The floor was covered in dog feces and the home was infested with flies. The home was in complete disarray and the children were only given mattresses on the floor with no linens to sleep on, deputies say. All of the children had open sores and lice on them as well.After deputies had been on scene for an hour and a half, Resko finally arrived at the home. She told deputies that she had just been gone for a few minutes, but quickly began changing her story once deputies told her how long they had been there investigating.MCSO says that upon further review of Resko’s history, deputies found two previously reported incidents where the children had been left unsupervised. The Department of Children and Families responded to an incident on February 2, and implemented a supervision plan with Resko, who was instructed to not allow the 13-year-old to babysit the other children anymore.Deputies ultimately determined that Resko failed on multiple occasions to provide care and supervision for these children. DCF responded and took custody of the six children. Resko was arrested and charged with six counts of Child Neglect.Resko is being held on a ,000 bond. 2412
