4-H programs across the country are known for their youth development programs. Now, students in 4-H are taking their civic engagement to the next level by helping others amid the COVID-19 pandemic."We’ve got partnerships with UC Davis and San Francisco medical centers where we’re getting sterile wrap and then young people are recycling that material and making masks for front-line workers, for agriculture laborers, for people working in restaurants," says Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty, California's 4-H Director. She says groups across the state are making masks and shields for essential workers and people who need them.In Sonoma County, several 4-H families spent their time in quarantine putting several 3-D printers to good use."We decided to start printing face shields. We printed a few different designs and used the transparency overhead and members of our community joined us. Together we printed over 1,000 face shields and 2,000 neck straps which are the straps that keep the masks off the ears of essential workers," says Jametha Cosgrove of Golden Hills 4-H. The protective gear went to their local essential workers and even nurses and doctors across the state who needed them.Santa Clara County 4-H ambassador Joey Jacoby put together mask-making kits and is distributing cloth masks to the community as part of his service learning project."The masks are just clean, fresh, cotton material so 100% cotton masks," says Jacoby. Jacoby blew away his original goal of 350 masks with the help of numerous donations and other 4-H volunteers. They ultimately produced more than 2,000 masks and face shields and counting.“We had the distribution event where anyone who had supplies could drive up in their car, open their trunk and then we would place items into their trunk. There was never any contact. We were well over six feet apart the entire time," says Jacoby."My job was to sew the bins on and sew the edge," says Aaron Alger, whose sister and parents, all former 4-H students, helped in the project. In total, more than 36 families helped Jacoby put together masks and gather materials, including Karen Clayton, who is a project leader for Stevens Creek 4-H."The opportunity to step up and just provide fabric where I quilt, I have too much fabric and I was more than happy to pull some together for Joey and his service learning project. I think a really big lesson that I hope the youth around us got out of this is there’s always something you can do," says Clayton.Families in 4-H across California say the mask and shield-making experience has helped their kids stay active in 4-H during the pandemic, while still contributing to the community during this uncertain time. 2701

(KGTV) -- The 75-year-old pilot who was killed when his small passenger plane crashed in Northern California Friday night has been identified as Carl Morrison of Fallbrook. Sonoma County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from the US Air Force at about 6:40 p.m. reporting an emergency transponder activation from a small passenger plane in the city of Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.  Deputies were dispatched to the location but were unable to locate the plane."Around the same time, a woman from San Diego County had called Petaluma PD and reported her husband was overdue home," said Sgt. Spencer Crum of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.Shortly after 10:00 PM deputies spotted a small fire in a remote ravine near the 3600 block of Manor Lane, Crum said. Deputies reached the location of the fire and discovered the downed aircraft and the body of a man believed to be the pilot. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.Morrison was believed to have left the Petaluma Airport en route to San Diego County in his Mooney M20 fix winged airplane, the sheriff's office said.Bob Morrison, Carl Morrison's oldest son, said that Carl Morrison was a retired U.S. Marine who served twenty years. He was also the Region Vice Commander of the Fallbrook Senior Squadron 87 Civil Air Patrol. He served with them since 2006.In addition to being a father of six, he was a lawyer who owned an environmental consulting company, Bob Morrison said. He was in Northern California on business, returning home, when his plane crashed. Bob Morrison said his father had been flying for 20 years, which was a lifelong dream of his. "He left his mark wherever he went in a positive way," Bob Morrison said. 1794

(KGTV) - Did a welcome to KC sign really have a typo that turned the word "annually" into "anally?"No.The picture of it is a fake. The actual sign does say "Kansas City welcomes 25 million visitors annually." 220

(KGTV) - Did Planned Parenthood call for a Disney princess to have an abortion?Yes, although it wasn't the national organization.A regional Planned Parenthood in Pennsylvania played off a popular meme and called for princesses who have had, are pro-choice, undocumented, union workers, and trans. The tweet has since been deleted.  353

(KGTV) - It's now "Sir" Ringo Starr.Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, 77, was knighted at Buckingham Palace Tuesday by The Duke of Cambridge.Starr joins Paul McCartney as the band's only two members to be knighted. McCartney received his knighthood in 1997."It means a lot actually," Starr told the BBC. "It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this."Starr, whose real name is Richard Starkey, told BBC he met with McCartney in Los Angeles last week. McCartney reportedly offered Starr advice for the ceremony, saying "keep smiling."It's not the first high-honor Starr has received at Buckingham Palace. In October 1965, the entire band was each awarded The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), which recognizes contributions to the arts and sciences, charity, and public service. The MBE came at a time when rock and roll was still viewed as anti-establishment, prompting some past honorees to return their MBEs in protest. 1017
