SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Lifeguards responded to two reported shark sightings off Scripps Beach Friday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said the first report came from a surfer at the beach -- located between La Jolla Shores and Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier -- at around 10:30 a.m. As of 4 p.m., there were no additional sightings and the advisory for beachgoers had been lifted from La Jolla Shores beach. The surfer told lifeguards she was about 100 yards from the beach and within the surf line when she saw a six-foot shark “that was not acting aggressively and was heading north,” according to SDFD officials.Lifeguards patrolled the area where the share was seen but did not locate it.SDFD officials also said another surfer told lifeguards of a shark in the area that was also about six feet in length.Lifeguards at the beach are informing beachgoers of the sightings and posted warning signs on the beach.SDFD officials said no city beaches were closed. The sightings come one day after at least three sharks were seen in the waters off Torrey Pines State Beach. 1107

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Harbor Police Tuesday arrested a man accused of attacking a teen Syrian refugee on board an MTS trolley, sparking a hate crime investigation. According to police, 26-year-old Adrian Vergara was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor narcotic charge. During his arrest, Vergara was recognized as being wanted in connection to an ongoing hate crime investigation, police said. The arrest stems from the beating of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee on a San Diego Trolley car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?"RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeThe teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab."According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim reportedly exited the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. He said the man also got off the trolley and left the scene.Numerous people reportedly watched as the victim was attacked, but no one stepped in to help him. Police have obtained video of the attack and said it confirms what the victim reported. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego International Airport is reporting an increase in travelers as coronavirus restrictions continue to lift.New numbers from the San Diego Airport Authority showed that from June 18 to 21, an average of 8,679 daily travelers went through the TSA Checkpoint. That's a drop off of 80 percent from the same time last year. However, during the height of the coronavirus restrictions in April, the drop off was as much as 95 percent compared to the same time in 2019. "From what we are seeing and based on our conversations with airlines, leisure travel is coming back faster than business travel, and this is consistent with nationwide trends and reports," said Airport Authority spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo. LoPiccolo says the airport has taken numerous steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19, including plexiglass sneeze guards in some areas, increased cleaning and floor markers to encourage social distancing. The large drop off in travel has taken a toll on businesses that depend on travelers to survive.Across the runway at Park, Shuttle, and Fly, owner Al Cruz says the lack of air travel forced his family to temporarily lay off the lots 15 workers."We were very scared," Cruz said. "We moved real quick, we have to survive. We're family-owned and we're not a big corporation. We don't have a lot of money to sustain us.During the height of the shutdown, Cruz rented hundreds of spots to a rental car company to store excess cars, but it was a revenue cut. In June, he received a Paycheck Protection Program loan and reopened, hiring back the 15 workers. There are now about 45 cars owned by travelers in the lot. Cruz said he needs the trend of increased flying to continue to make it. "If it does not, it flattens out like it was three months ago, we can't survive on that," he said. The Auto Club of Southern California is reporting a surge in people inquiring about road trips as their preferred form of summer travel. It will release its formal projections Thursday. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in Ocean Beach are expressing concern over massive gatherings consistently happening in their neighborhood. On Wednesday evening, ABC 10News captured video of what looked like a festival, with dozens of people socializing and playing music at a park near the OB Pier. Many among the crowd were observed not following county public health orders of social distancing and face coverings.San Diego police were called to the park after receiving complaints regarding the big crowds and noise.Earlier in the day, during the county's COVID-19 press conference with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, the Ocean Beach Town Council addressed their concerns over the gatherings. The council asked San Diego leaders when they will do more to address the issues.Fletcher was asked about enforcement funding and how that would help with concerns like those raised by the OB Town Council."In the first bucket of enforcement that was provided, there are 13 staff who will be dedicated on those egregious and very blatant willful violations of what’s happening in addition to the efforts that we do around outbreaks and pre-outbreaks," Fletcher responded.Police said large gatherings in Ocean Beach take place every Wednesday.Mark Winkie, president of the OB Town Council, said, “We feel like we’re being disrespected. We call it ‘mayhem in Ocean Beach.' That’s really what it is right now.”Winkie said the town council has submitted multiple complaints along with a letter that said, in part: “They need to do something about the unacceptable levels of gatherings, gallons on trash left behind and illegal vendors selling merchandise.”Winkie added those are all huge public health concerns."We'd like some education to be done for the people down there. We don't want the police department to arrest people, we want the people to understand this is our community. You're welcome to be here, but you need to adhere to social distancing rules and respect our community,” Winkie said.So far, police have only responded to noise complaints in the area.City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, whose district includes Ocean Beach, told ABC 10News in a statement that she is "committed to direct additional resources on Wednesday nights and has urged the mayor and county to enforce mask wearing and social distancing."Winkie said that's not enough."The city doing anything at all to prevent people from congregating closely together as they have been is not accurate, that hasn't been done,” said Winkie.Neighbors said many of the crowds start at the farmer's market then work their way towards the park.ABC 10News reached out to OB's Main Street Association, who is in charge of that event. They said they're working on an official statement, but they want to do what's best for the community. 2801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County lawmakers reacted Wednesday night after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump. The vote marks only the third time a U.S. president has been impeached. Democrats and Republicans both voted along party lines Tuesday night, although three Democrats shifted away from their party on article two, obstruction of congress. RELATED: President Trump has been impeached by House DemocratsMeanwhile, current and former lawmakers throughout San Diego County and California reacted to the news of impeachment. Read through the statements below: "The Democrats’ shameless impeachment sham is three years in the making. The damage they’ve inflicted will be felt for generations. It’s more important than ever to stand against their radical, socialist agenda and fight for the future of our country," Former Congressman from the 49th district Darrell Issa said. RELATED: Impeachment trial in Senate would look very different from a regular court caseSenator Kamala Harris also issued the following statement: “In the United States of America, nobody is above the law. And nobody, especially a president, is exempt from accountability. Our nation’s founders provided Congress with the tool of impeachment because they envisioned a day when a future president would abuse his power and block congressional checks and oversight. Now, Donald J. Trump will go down as only the third president in American history to be impeached. “I thank my colleagues in the House of Representatives for conducting a thorough investigation that lived up our founders’ expectations. The facts led to two clear and troubling articles of impeachment—all despite unprecedented obstruction from the president. “It will soon fall on the United States Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty to review the facts of the case and determine whether the president’s actions warrant his removal from office. In the impeachment trial of President Trump, I will fight for truth, fairness, and justice. I urge each of my Senate colleagues to do the same.”Senator Dianne Feinstein also issued a statement Wednesday night: "Only three times in our country’s history has a president been impeached, and the weight of history falls heavily on these decisions." pic.twitter.com/PaG6jgg7cM— Senator Dianne Feinstein (@SenFeinstein) December 19, 2019 “Make no mistake. We are not impeaching the President. He is impeaching himself. If you are the President, and you obstruct justice, try to bribe a foreign leader and threaten national security, you’re going to get impeached. End of story," said Rep. Susan Davis of the 53rd Congressional District. Governor Gavin Newsom also made a comment on Twitter Wednesday night:And just like that -- Donald Trump becomes the third president in our history to be impeached.— Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) December 19, 2019 2888
