BATAVIA, Ohio -- Some of Robin Hornberger's best students at West Clermont High School have two choices when it comes to college, and neither is ideal: Go into debt to afford the next phase of their education or abandon it altogether. "Our dream is that they can do what they want to do, that they can look at all the professions possible and pick their profession," she said. "But for some kids, it's just too expensive. … They would be having more debt per month than they would be making per month just starting a job."She wants to help them find a third option: Go to college with enough assistance -- no repayment required -- to make it manageable. That's why she's training every week and paying registration fees out of her own pocket to run in one marathon for each month of the next three years. She's already got two under her belt.Hornberger's marathons are a fundraiser and a way for her to draw attention to the difficult situation of economically disadvantaged students who want to better themselves through higher learning.Two months into 2018, she's raised ,000. By the end of 2021, she hopes it will be 0,000 -- enough to send one West Clermont graduate to college with an ,000 scholarship in hand for the next six years."One kid at a time is slow, but if you look into the future, 20 years down the line, that's a whole classroom of kids that have parents who have gone to college," she said. BOISE, Idaho — Two high-profile geothermal water-line breaks in Downtown Boise have residents a bit concerned — especially since the city has plans to expand the system.But the City of Boise said the leaks were a lot less dramatic than the cool air mixed with steam made them look (images show bright green colors in the air), and are looking forward to the future of innovative geothermal ideas.Boise's geothermal heat system has been in full operation since the 1980s, and as usual, using water and metal is a recipe for corrosion. But the city says it is doing its best to remain proactive."A lot of people walk the streets of Downtown Boise and have no idea that such a big footprint of Downtown Boise is heated with this renewable, clean resource that we take advantage of in a big way every day," said Colin Hickman, communications manager in the Public Works Department for the City of Boise.It's a system that dates back to the 1890s when Boise began using geothermal heat for Victorian homes and the original natatorium. In 1983, Boise began the geothermal heat system, now holding the record for the largest geothermal system in the United States, supplying heat to 92 buildings in Downtown Boise."That equates to about 6-million square feet," Hickman said.It’s primarily used for heating buildings but it also provides heat for the YMCA pool, as well as sidewalks, providing shovel-free snow removal in the winter.JUMP is one of the buildings that uses the system."It's really a smart investment for JUMP, and for our community, as it's a low cost, clean, renewable, and local energy source, it made sense on a lot of levels," said Kathy O’Neill, the community engagement director at JUMP.The geothermal water is pumped from a well in the Boise Foothills. It's then brought downtown underneath buildings and run through pipes, where the water is sitting at 170 degrees. It's then put in a heat exchanger where it takes off about 55-degrees of that water, to heat the building.Afterward, it's taken back to be redeposited at Julia Davis Park.That process only started in 1999. Before then, the geothermal water was taken out of the aquifer, then disposed of in the Boise River — and aquifer levels started to decline. That happened until that re-injection site was made at Julia Davis Park, bringing aquifer levels right back up to where they began."The carbon footprint is almost nothing. it relies almost entirely on electricity just to pump up. There's no fossil fuel being used. It's a really clean and efficient energy," Hickman said.It also comes with a relatively low price tag."As far as our overall utilities, the geothermal is not a substantial cost for the city," Hickman said.The geothermal heating bill is costing about ,000 each winter month for the entire downtown area. And lucky for Boise, it's a system very unique to the Western U.S."It really comes down to where geothermal, an aquifer is available. And so it's really, Boise is very fortunate to have this aquifer right under our streets," Hickman said.The City of Boise's representatives said they are looking forward to expansion plans and new innovative uses of the geothermal system. 3208

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Up and down South Florida, garbage can be found along our streets, parking lots, and sidewalks.A Boynton Beach man and his group of volunteers, known as the "Litter Hikers of America," are trying to reverse the trend to create a litter-free environment.Sunrises in sunny South Florida are a special moment."Really nice and calming for me. I enjoy it," said Richard Reyes. "This is my coffee right here."Reyes takes it in every morning before checking his tools, supplies, and his route for the day."Going to be a very good day. Hope to get lots of litter," said Reyes.On this day, he and his crew were on Federal Highway in Boynton Beach."When I walk, I do the median and crew does the sides," said Reyes, who was joined by his friends Suzie and Shawn.They have quite a few fans. The three of them search the streets, sidewalks, and parking lots."I have a facemask, gloves," said Reyes as he picked up trash.There are bad surprises and sometimes good. On this day the Publix parking lot was clean.No matter the weather, Reyes is out there."Six times a week. Sometimes seven," said Reyes.Reyes has been picking up trash since his days on the west coast of Florida, back when life threw him a curveball."Aortic valve replacement and an aneurism repaired," said Reyes.Following his recovery, Reyes started walking and gathering trash."I can’t go long distances like I used to. So walking is very healthy for me and that’s a big reason why I do it," said Reyes. "I came out here and continue the effort in Boynton Beach."At the end of his cleanups, he weighs his garbage. He collects data too."43,200 pounds of litter this year," said Reyes.Proof that Reyes has a long journey ahead of him, but he knows each step along South Florida’s streets, inches him closer to his goal. A goal of a clean, litter-free environment."Call it a sport if you will. Walking, stretching, picking up litter. Can’t beat it," said Reyes.Reyes is now retired and plans to do his clean-ups as long as he can.
