WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — Northern Kentucky law enforcement officials are working extra hard this time of year to keep any "Grinchiness" out of their respective "Whovilles."Before Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Conrad hits the road these days, he arms himself with kindness, in the form of gift cards.“It’s part of the Sheriff's Santa Project,” Conrad said.It’s an idea that was brought to the office three years ago by their chaplain.“I really think projects like this give us a glass-half-full attitude, rather than a glass-half-empty,” Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Rev. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal.The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. With his spring break just hours away, Central Michigan University student James Eric Davis Jr. was with his parents in a campus residence hall Friday morning when he shot them dead, police say.Davis Jr., 19, shot and killed his mother and father in the dorm on the northwestern edge of campus Friday morning, authorities said, leading to an hours-long manhunt that ended with his arrest early Saturday.It was the nation's 12th school shooting this year.It's not immediately clear what led to the shooting or why the parents, James Eric Davis Sr., 48, and Diva Jeenen Davis, 47, were on campus in Mount Pleasant, a roughly four-hour drive from their Chicago-area home.But authorities said the student had an encounter with police hours earlier -- on Thursday evening when he was taken to a hospital for what officers believed was a bad reaction to drugs, campus police Lt. Larry Klaus said.And the parents may have been intending to pick up their son for spring break, said Andre Harvey, mayor of the Chicago suburb of Bellwood, where the elder Davis was a part-time officer."The family is in shock and trying to piece everything together," a relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN.Arrest comes after midnightDetails about the younger Davis' arrest weren't immediately clear. But it came early Saturday after someone reporting seeing him on or near campus, the university said."The suspect was seen and reported by an individual on a train passing through the north end of campus shortly after midnight," the university said in an online statement. When a Minnesota teacher learned that her school's custodian was in dire need of a new kidney, she didn't hesitate to step up to the plate.According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune and CNN, teacher Erin Durga and custodian Part Mertens have been co-workers at Kimball Elementary School in Kimball, Minnesota, for nine years.The two were well acquainted — they often exchanged pleasantries in the hall, and Durga's children attended a daycare ran by Merten's wife.Recently, Mertens had been leaving school early three days a week to attend dialysis treatments. Earlier this year, the school organized a "Hats for Pat" fundraiser to help pay for his treatments. But school officials didn't realize how dire Mertens' situation was until his daughter posted a plea for help on Facebook.According to Mertens' daughter, Kayla Matten, none of her fathers' relatives was a match for a kidney transplant."We are now in the process of trying to find someone with an O blood type and someone who is willing to donate their kidney," she wrote, according to CNN.When Durga saw the post, she didn't hesitate. She knew she wanted to donate her kidney to a co-worker in need."Why wouldn't you [do it]?" she told the Star Tribune.In late spring, Durga and Mertens found out they were a match."It brought a few tears to my eyes," Mertens told the Star Tribune. "I'm not much for expressing myself."Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the two underwent the transplant surgery on July 3. Absolutely not," Locker said.Now the former stay-at-home mom imagines if she would have had a prenuptial agreement."I think I would want to sign one to protect myself," Locker said.According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 60% of family law attorneys surveyed reported an overall rise in prenuptial agreements in recent years."There’s been a lot of postnuptial agreements, prenuptial agreements," attorney Abigail Bebe said.WPTV called six local attorneys and five of them said during the pandemic they’ve seen an increase of prenuptial agreements.
