SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeless encampments have moved into the site of previous fires in University heights, sparking more fire concerns.March 2018. Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days. Within a week, something will be going on down there," said Chruden.Chruden believes regular visits to the area by city crews are needed, possibly twice a month. 10news reached out to Councilmember Chris Ward's office for a comment and are waiting to hear back. 1574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five more people have died from influenza in San Diego and weekly cases hit a season high this past week.County health officials said one of the flu deaths included a 40-year-old man from North County who had underlying medical conditions with no known flu vaccination record. The other deaths ranged from 47 to 90 years of age and all also had underlying medical conditions. This season, there have been a total of 54 influenza-related deaths in the county. At this time last year, there had been 318 deaths.RELATED: Is it a cold or a flu? Here are 5 ways you can tell, according to the CDC"Influenza can be deadly. People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventative measures, especially those at higher risk of developing complications," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. "In addition to getting vaccinated, people should practice good hand hygiene."Over last week, 675 flu cases were reported in San Diego County, a season high, according to County Health and Human Services. The number is up 21 percent of the week before, when 536 cases were recorded.Due to the increased flu activity, an order for unvaccinated medical personnel to to wear masks while in patient care areas has been extended until April 30.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Erica Norman spent months saving thousands for a cruise down the Mexican Riviera on the massive Norwegian Bliss. Norman and about 4,000 others boarded that ship this week and were whisked away from the Port of Los Angeles. They were excited for a trip down to Cabo and Mazatlan - but instead, they wound up in San Francisco."I paid ,000 for this cruise and it's just a tour going in a circle in California," said Norman, who lives in Orange County. "I'm not happy about that."Norman said that about two hours into the cruise, the passengers got an announcement that the ship would divert to San Francisco, San Diego, and make one stop in Ensenada before heading back to Los Angeles. The ship made the call to avoid Hurricane Willa down south. RELATED: Tropical storms force Norwegian Bliss cruise ship to divert to San Diego"The safety and security of our guests and crew is always our top priority," Norwegian cruises said in a statement. "Guests were notified of the change as soon as our operations team was able to confirm the modified itinerary."But Norman said many of the guests felt blindsided. "I think they knew ahead of time, and then once they got us out in the water then they decided to change the itinerary because no one could get off at that time," Norman said. The Bliss reached San Diego Wednesday morning. At 1,094 feet long and a capacity of 4,004 passengers, it's the largest to ever dock in San Diego, a city that usually gets older ships on less traveled routes. RELATED: Cruise industry booming as season begins in San Diego"The guests will visit all the attractions, go on tours, go to restaurants, go shopping," said Adam Deaton, who directs cruise business for the Port of San Diego. About two dozen taxicabs waited for the passengers as they disembarked on Harbor Drive. Bikes that normally would have baked in the sun were rented. And pedicab drivers said they were finding new passengers. A food mart across from the ship had a line about 10 deep. "I'd rather be safe than sorry to even get in the area of Willa," said Lillie West, a passenger who said she was glad the ship diverted.West had never been to San Diego and said she had 0 to spend locally. The Port says most cruise ships have a 0,000 impact to the local economy in their stops in San Diego, although the Bliss is so big it could be up to million. But not everyone planned to spend their dollars in San Diego, Norman included."I work 45 minutes from here, and I'm just trying to find something to do to make the best of it," she said. For Norman, that was to go back onto the Bliss, the ultramodern ship where many of the amenities are prepaid. 2761
