DURANGO, Colo. – The young bear that was burned in the East Canyon Fire in June was released back into the wild this week not far from where it was found, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.The 2-year-old bear had been recovering at CPW’s Frisco Creek rehab facility in Del Norte from burns he suffered during the fire. CPW said the bear weighed only 43 pounds when he was first captured in the fire.But after undergoing salve treatment on his paws, and having his bandages changed 16 times over the course of a month, he recovered and was moved from a pen with concrete floors to one with trees and hiding spaces mid-July, where he spent the past monthMichael Sirochman, the veterinary technician and manager at Frisco Creek, said the bear was 110 pounds and had seen its paws toughen up before he was released Monday.“He’s now about the weight he should be for a two-year-old bear and is in good shape for going into the fall,” Sirochman said.CPW officers originally found the bear on June 16 walking near a pond on the east side of the East Canyon Fire, which burned in June outside of Durango. Officials said the bear was released not far from that location on Monday.CPW said the bear originally hesitated for a moment as it looked at and smelled its new surroundings but then jumped from a CPW truck and ran into the forest. EL CAJON (CNS) - A Santee man accused of in the death of his infant daughter pleaded not guilty today to charges of murder and child abuse. Daniel Charles Marshall, 34, was arrested and charged last week in connection with the April 25 death of 7-month-old Hailey Marshall.Paramedics responding to a medical emergency call in the 8600 block of Paseo Del Rey in Santee on April 22 found the child in medical distress, Lt. Thomas Seiver said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital three days later of injuries that included skull fractures, prosecutors said.The circumstances of the death ``warranted further investigation, resulting in the (sheriff's) child abuse unit responding,'' according toSeiver. ``As the investigation progressed, the homicide unit responded and assumed responsibility of the investigation.'' Marshall is being held in lieu of million bail. 874

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The pilot of a small plane made an emergency landing at a field and playground next to W. D. Hall Elementary School in El Cajon.The emergency landing happened around 4 p.m. Friday.The pilot says he took from Gillespie Field for a practice flight and was headed back to Gillespie for a landing when he ran out of fuel. He says his engine stopped, and he had to look for a place to land. He was able to glide onto the field safely.The plane hit a fence on the way down causing damage to a wing.The pilot says he has been flying for decades.No injuries were reported. 598

(KGTV) - A Dulzura man is describing his harrowing escape, after he woke up to his apartment on fire.At Barrett Lake Winery Monday morning, flames tore through a converted barn housing the apartment of vineyard foreman Patrick Rowan. Around 5:30 a.m., Rowan woke to a loud noise and opened a door which opens into the barn's interior."So bright, about 20 feet away. Looked like the sun parked in the room next to me," said Rowan.He saw flames everywhere and rushed into a second apartment unit to rescue two barn cats, but they kept running off."When I looked back, the door -- ceiling part -- was falling. Everything was on fire, except to the left, so I ran through there," said Rowan.He ran back his own apartment to get his pets: two Siamese kittens named Tom and Jerry. For minutes, he tried to coax them to come out from under the bed, but they didn't. He then noticed that his only exit, the kitchen area, was on fire."The roof, ceiling, and door are all wood, and all on fire. Started falling, so I had to get out of there. I ran through the fire, but didn't get burned," said Rowan.As he escaped, he didn't feel fear, only guilt."I felt like a piece of **** because I couldn't save my animals. They were my homies. They were the only things that mattered," said Rowan.One kitten died in the fire. The other is missing. Rowan's apartment was a total loss, and he didn't have renters insurance.He'll be homeless for the holidays, but he's still planning on buying gifts for family and friends."I'm not letting it ruin anything. I'm getting people gifts. People are yelling at me about it ... I don’t have anything anyways. The few hundred dollars I want to spend don't matter," said Rowan.Fire investigators told the property owners the fire was suspicious and the investigation is ongoing. Dreher Township, PA (WNEP) -- Parents are expressing concern after a church announced it will hold a ceremony next week, and worshipers are encouraged to bring assault rifles with them, and the ceremony will be just down the road from an elementary school.The ceremony in Wayne County was planned before the mass shooting at a high school in Florida last week.Church leaders still plan to go ahead with the blessing of guns, which has some parents of elementary school students on edge.Sanctuary Church and Rod of Iron Ministries are one in the same, run by the Moon family from South Korea who started the controversial Unification Church.Church leaders said that state police wanted to know what the ceremony next week involving AR-15-style assault rifles is all about.At 10 a.m. next Wednesday, church leaders expect up to 600 people for a blessing ceremony, and many of those people are expected to be armed with AR-15s, the assault rifle used in recent mass shootings across the country."This will be a big thing for us. It's a new stage for us because it incorporates the rod of iron, as it is in Revelations. Revelations talks about the returning Christ ruling with the rod of iron."Tim Elder sat down with WNEP to explain the beliefs of the church, led by the Reverend Sean Moon.Moon is the son of the late Sun Myung Moon, who founded the controversial Unification Church that drew national attention in the 1970s and '80s. The Rod of Iron Ministries is an offshoot of that religious organization focusing on what it believes is the right of families to defend themselves with assault rifles."This rod of iron is the AR-15, in today's terms."The Moon family also owns Kahr Arms, a gunmaker that moved to Pike County a couple years ago. WNEP was at the opening ceremony at that time in Blooming Grove Township.Church leaders say the AR-15s will not be loaded for the ceremony next week and safety zip ties will be used. However, state police are involved. Elder says troopers have reached out for more information.Just down the road from the church is Wallenpaupack South Elementary School with 280 students, plus teachers and staff. In light of recent gun violence at schools, the planned ceremony with assault rifles is concerning for parents."It's something I would consider keeping my child home. It's scary," said Liz Zoccola."I wish they wouldn't have it at all. I don't think there's a good time to have it, especially this close," Kendra Hanor said.The ceremony was planned before last week's deadly rampage at a high school in Florida.Wallenpaupack Area school officials are deciding what, if anything, the school will do next Wednesday in response to the ceremony down the road.  2719
