BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in different fields, as well as local governments around China, have been engaged in implementing the central authorities' strategic plans for the far western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to achieve what authorities have described as leapfrog development and lasting stability.The following are some key facts about China's efforts over the past month since the central work conference on Xinjiang's development concluded on May 19:-- In late May, the Ministry of Culture decided to launch several projects to strengthen the cultural heritage protection and cultural market supervision and boost the culture industry in Xinjiang. Graduates of the college will receive a religious bachelor's degree and serve in mosques and Islamic associations across the region.-- Also in late May, the Ministry of Transport issued a statement jointly with Xinjiang's regional government pledging to spend more money-- which will cover 50 percent of the construction costs-- for road building in Xinjiang.-- On June 1 the regulation on reform of resource taxes in Xinjiang, which was jointly issued by the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Taxation, took effect, marking Xinjiang as the first region in China to begin such reform.The regulation provides a shift to taxing crude oil and natural gas by price, rather than volume. The reform aims to raise local revenue for the resource-rich Xinjiang.-- From June 9 to June 12, officials of central governmental departments, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Commerce and the National Development and Reform Commission, as well as officials of the China Development Bank, visited Xinjiang to inspect the development of local industries.
BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China has approved 27 websites to sell medicine to individual consumers via the internet, the State Food and Drug Administration announced on its website on Tuesday .The administration stipulates that the 27 online pharmaceutical dealers could only sell over-the-counter medications to individual consumers, not to other businesses or medical facilities.According to a provisional regulation regarding the online transaction of drugs, those selling medications online must receive a license and put their license code on the front page of their transaction websites.The list of the 27 websites permitted to sell medications online is available on the administration's official website, www.sfda.gov.cn.

HAIKOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China is bracing for a strong tropical storm named "Mindelle", which is expected to skim the southernmost island province of Hainan between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.At 8 a.m. Monday, a tropical low pressure system across the South China Sea intensified into the fifth tropical storm of the year, after being upgraded to a strong tropical storm eight hours later.The storm, by the name of "Mindellu", which means dandelion in Korean, is expected to approach the Beibu Gulf off the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after skipping Hainan, the Hainan provincial meteorological bureau said.Local authorities in Hainan have halted railway, shipping services and tourism programs and called fishing boats to return to ports as they braced for the storm.Both cargo and passenger shipping services were halted at 5 p.m., according to the ban issued by the provincial maritime affairs bureau.Also, passenger and cargo train services through Qiongzhou strait between the mainland and Hainan were halted at 5 p.m.Meanwhile, more than 26,000 fishing boats have returned to their ports.Tourism activities, such as diving and water-motorbike-driving in Sanya, the famous tourist city in southern Hannan, have also been halted as residents prepared for the storm.The Hainan provincial government said they would spare no efforts in protecting the safety of fishermen and tourists, as well as strengthening the monitoring of reservoirs.
BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Expo 2010 Shanghai is proving to be a boon for successful Chinese entrepreneurs eager to tap into the global market.The 184-day event, which is predicted to attract an estimated 4 million foreign visitors along with global media coverage, is considered to be a golden opportunity for Chinese companies to raise their brands to an international level and explore business opportunities.According to survey released last year by the information office of Shanghai Municipal Government, more than a quarter of the respondents were hoping to visit Shanghai during the Expo to seek future business.The online survey polled 503 foreigners in 44 countries and regions across the world, 30 percent of whom were senior corporate executives.Of the Expo's 58 partners and official sponsors, 47 are Chinese companies, 25 are from Shanghai, 15 are from Beijing and seven from other parts of the country.
