BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – When Dawn Nadboralski lost her father, a sharpshooter with the US Army, it broke her heart. “I’m a daddy’s girl,” she said. “I’m the only child, so when he passed, it hit me really hard.” To help herself heal, Nadboralski went into her dad’s garage and started using his tools – turning old wooden pallets into American flags. “It takes probably about an hour and a half and I paint them by hand,” she said. “I feel like in a way, it’s honoring my father.” And at the same time, it’s honoring the lives of men that fought for this country. Nadboralski sells the flags and donates that money to Forest Home Cemetery to buy headstones for Civil War soldiers who have unmarked graves. “We don’t leave anyone behind even if they’re gone,” said Thomas Ludka, a military veteran. Ludka and Maraget Berres work to find unmarked graves. The headstones are free but cost 5 to install – money they say is well worth it. “A man like him helped destroy slavery.” Ludka said while pointing out a gravesite of a Civil War soldier. “His life meant something. His service meant something. He should not be forgotten.” So far, Nadboralski has sold 33 flags – raising enough money to buy 13 headstones. “I feel like this is just a small thing I can do to give back,” she said. The case has received widespread attention once authorities revealed Kraft’s involvement in the investigation. However, the case stretches far beyond the billionaire and South Florida. "I think it's very safe to say without any hyperbole that this is the tip of the tip of the iceberg,” said Sheriff William Snyder of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. So far, 25 people have been charged with solicitation, and police believe hundreds of others could be arrested. In just three months, the investigation has already uncovered a multi-million dollar international scheme that stretches from China to New York City and Palm Beach, Florida. "It's about time the country has a real conversation about human trafficking, which is modern day slavery in our midst,” said Dave Aronberg, state attorney for Palm Beach County, in a recent presser. “This is not about lonely old men or victimless crimes.” Amanda Finger, the executive director of the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking, says unfortunately, this isn't the only type of trafficking they've seen. “You also see cases that involve tourism industry that involve people in the western slope, who are forced into farm work ranchers,” Finger says. Many organizations consider human trafficking the world's fastest growing crime. The most common form is sex trafficking, and the industry pulls in an estimated billion each year. According to the United Nations, most of the victims are women and girls. Finger says any community can be impacted, so she helps people and organizations recognize red flags, like poor living conditions and ways people spend money. “If they ever talk about needing to give it back to someone else, someone else is controlling their money, someone else is controlling their documentation and they don't have their ID on them,” Finger says of signs someone may be a victim.
