SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Education experts say it’s a reality we need to accept: distance learning will not be as academically successful for many students as classroom-based learning, particularly for disadvantaged students.Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement Friday that school reopenings will be directly tied to pandemic data means both public and private schools throughout San Diego County will most likely start fall classes virtually.Three experts told ABC 10News that virtual learning will likely be the hardest on young students who require the most adult direction.“Early grade elementary family environments right now, they’re probably the most challenged and in need of the most amount of help,” said Dr. James Rivet, an educational consultant at SD Kids First.Younger elementary school students require more focus and attention from a parent, who may be distracted by other responsibilities like a full-time job, according to Dr. Deborah Pontillo, a pediatric psychologist and the owner of SD Kids First.With young learners, “their independence isn't really developed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Emergency crews rescued a driver that was trapped in an SUV that rolled over on a Clairemont street early Tuesday morning.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego firefighters and police were called to the 4000 block of Genesee Avenue in response to a crash involving a red SUV.A witness told ABC 10News the vehicle was speeding down the street when it struck a median and then rolled over several times, also hitting some parked vehicles.The witness said two passengers were able to get out of the wreckage, but the driver was pinned in the SUV.Responding crews took about 30 minutes to get the driver out with the Jaws of Life. The driver and one passenger were taken to the hospital, but the other passenger left the scene and is being sought by police. 774

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite skyrocketing prices, San Diego’s housing inventory is up in 2018, according to a new report by Trulia. The trend in America’s Finest City sits opposite the national trend, which is seeing a declining inventory. The national drop in inventory in the fourth quarter of 2018 was mainly driven by a drop in for-sale homes, however, in San Diego, the total for-sale inventory rose by more than 27 percent. San Diego’s trade-up inventory saw the largest increase at more than 46 percent. The report points out that, despite inventory gains in San Diego, prices continue to rise, outpacing wage growth. The trend places homeownership out of reach for many first-time homebuyers.
