LAS VEGAS — For the first time in 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for the treatment of the flu.  The antiviral drug, called Xofluza, is a single dose treatment.  It is for patients who are 12 or older.  The drug must be taken within 48 hours of symptoms, according to the F.D.A. "Very exciting that we have another drug on the market," said Dr. Daliah Wachs.Xofluza is said to be as effective as Tamiflu in alleviating symptoms.  "Do I think it's a lifesaver? Potentially yes," said Dr. Wachs.Unlike earlier drugs, Xofluza is expected to work against drug-resistant strains. It will also shorten the length of the flu."The longer you have the flu, the more you are at risk for complications," said Dr. Wachs.Doctors say it is still critically important for everyone to get vaccinated, especially children and the elderly.  900

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) - Lake Elsinore’s Walker Canyon, site of a magnificent super bloom of poppies, reopened Monday after “Disneyland size crowds” overwhelmed the small Southern California city, creating what officials called a “miserable situation.” Social media photos showed heavy traffic on Interstate 15 near Lake Street and Nichols Road Sunday, where many visitors stopped and parked illegally to enjoy the flower fields. The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert Monday and shut down the Lake Street offramp to control the situation. Despite the start of the work week, the number of visitors remained high Monday due to spring break, according to Nicole Dailey, assistant to the Lake Elsinore city manager. Dailey was not able to estimate the amount of people traveling to the flower fields. Four people were hurt over the weekend, Dailey said. Lake Elsinore businesses saw a boost, Dailey reported, but it has been “too much of an increase.” Starbucks emailed city officials saying they were overwhelmed by the demand and couldn’t keep up. “This weekend has become unbearable Lake Elsinore,” city officials posted, adding “it has been miserable and has caused unnecessary hardships for our entire community.” Lake Elsinore also reached out to other law enforcement agencies for assistance. “We have brought in all available staff, as many outside traffic controllers that we could, more shuttles, and our small City can not sustain crowds of this magnitude,” city officials said on Instagram. “We have reached out to our neighboring and county agencies for help. We have reached out to Caltrans. We have reached out to CHP. We are running out of options.” Sunday afternoon, city officials shut down the golden hillsides due to the crush, saying they were “truly trying to do the best and right thing.” Lake Elsinore officials reopened Walker Canyon Monday, saying they didn’t have the resources available to enforce a closure. LEE COUNTY, Fla., — Your child gives it their all, both time and effort, yet struggles to complete a homework assignment.Another child scribbles their name on a piece of paper and turns it in.Technically, both students could get the same grade according to an investigation by Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida that’s uncovering the tactics teachers and administrators are using to boost low grades.WFTX's Tony Sadiku obtained emails from a Harns Marsh Middle School assistant principal to teachers asking for everyone’s commitment to follow the school’s grading policy, '50% minimum, 0 = 50' in a practice known as minimum grading.Teachers say students who would otherwise get a zero are given between a 50 to 59 percent regardless of whether they prove they’ve learned anything. If a student doesn’t turn in a single assignment all quarter, they’ve earned a 50% at some schools. The principal at Harns Marsh told teachers in 2016 via email, “A 60 for our students that are trying but are several grade levels behind academically is fair.”Some parents said they disagree.  “I don’t believe it’s fair, by no means,” said one parent of a 7th grader at the school.Several parents said they've never heard of minimum grading.  Even some Lee County School Board members said they were unaware of the school’s grading practice.  “I know of no such policy, formal or informal, in Lee County schools,” said Board Member Cathleen Morgan.“I am not aware of such a policy,” said Board Member Dr. Jane Kuckel. “I think every parent needs to be aware of the grading policy,” said Mark Castellano, a former Lee County public school teacher. The Lee County School District said minimum grading is not a District policy, but a practice implemented by some schools and teachers to encourage struggling students. “Often times a zero can completely deteriorate a grade and they will lose interest because they think there’s no way for them to get a passing grade,”  said Dr. Wanda Creel, the District’s Chief Academic Officer. “When students will grasp those concepts is really is on a personalized individualized basis. Minimum grading allows students to stay engaged while still learning and for teachers to continue to work with them through the process.”Creel said the goal is for students to pass on their own.But does a better grade on a report card mean students are actually learning?While students may have a better shot at passing their classes because of minimum grading, numbers from the Florida Department of Education show many still aren’t testing well.At Harns Marsh Middle school, 38 percent passed the English Language Arts Florida Standards Assessment test in 2017. In the entire District, 53 percent of middle schoolers passed.Harns Marsh kids also had lower numbers in the FSA Mathematics Test. Only 35 percent of kids passed last year compared to 51 percent of middle schoolers in the District who passed.Middle school students who don’t pass are still promoted to the next grade level, but may be more likely to struggle down the road.Statistically, 8th graders are more likely to be retained than 6th and 7th graders according to the Florida Department of Education.“Teachers will begin to think that I need to retain because this child doesn’t seem to be able to tackle the issues in high school,” Creel said. “A retained 8th grader can be one of the highest indicators of a dropout. We are finding strategies to help our overaged 8th graders to get the credits they need so they can move on to high school.”“You have kids that are absolutely motivated and they love learning. Those kids you rarely have to do anything. Then you have kids that struggle. They struggle with their home life. They struggle with their socioeconomic situations,” Castellano said.But is adjusting a student’s grade closer to passing the solution?“What are we teaching kids in terms of their personal responsibility for their education?” Castellano said.Castellans says in his nearly 30+ years of teaching, not once has he used the practice. “What they’re saying is for those kids the grade is irrelevant, it’s not going to motivate them,” said Robert Kenny, a professor of education at Florida Gulf Coast University. School Board Member Jane Kuckel supports minimum grading policies at some schools.“All students learn and thrive in different ways," she said. "The outcomes are non-negotiable. The process for getting there needs to be tailored to the achievement levels and learning styles of the students.”One parent argues her child earning the grade matters more.“It’s a big deal cause he needs to learn and he needs to make it in this world," the parent said. "The world is not going to give him a free pass forever and they don’t need to learn that in middle school.” The District said they plan to set up committees next fall to evaluate how minimum grading is being done to come up with a more uniform approach across the District.  5113

Law enforcement officials from New York to Florida are examining clues to find the person or persons who sent 10 packages containing what appear to be explosive materials to prominent Democrats, critics of President Donald Trump, and to CNN's New York offices as authorities classify the incidents as domestic terrorism.Three new packages were detected Thursday -- two intended for former Vice President Joe Biden and one for actor-director Robert DeNiro -- each bearing the same markings as the seven packages detected earlier this week. And authorities now believe several of the packages went through the Opa-locka, Florida, processing and distribution center, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.The devices mark one of the most serious attempts to stoke fear and terror in the US in a period that has already seen a number of violent political attacks. The apparent bombs, while rudimentary in design, according to law enforcement officials, targeted two former US presidents, a former vice president and potential presidential contender, and numerous outspoken critics of the Trump administration.Investigators are reviewing security footage from the CNN building and examining the packages themselves for potential clues, according to current and former law enforcement officials."Everything is a clue," a law enforcement official said.As authorities examine clues, they are also finding more questions to answer.One key question authorities are puzzling over is why none of the apparent bombs detonated, a second law enforcement source said, raising questions about the skill and motive of the bombmaker.This person said either the bombmaker was good enough to ensure none would go off and never intended them to explode or it was poorly constructed. Authorities consider the bombs to be potentially destructive because of the presence of what is believed to be pyrotechnic powder. That classification is based on the absence of other information and could change.The Secret Service, US Postal Inspector Service, and ATF are also working on the investigation with various state and federal offices. LA JOLLA, California — A long-time animal rights activist who has filmed seals and sea lions harassed in La Jolla says people are not getting the message.Andrea Hahn has filmed the animals every day since 1994. Footage from Sunday she says showed some of the worst behavior she has witnessed in recent months: a woman with a shovel disrupting pregnant mothers on the beach.Another video shows a grieving sea lion mother with her stillborn pup. It has generated over 100 million hits according to Hahn. She says the pregnant mothers are delivering more stillborn pups because people are not giving them proper space. She has even witnessed tourists stepping on the pups.  "People are not getting it. Tourists think because they paid money to get here they have the right to grapple with the animals. There are perfectly good laws on the books and people are ignoring them and the government is not enforcing the laws," said Hahn.A "no-selfie" sign was recently posted at South Casa Beach. It was posted to remind visitors that sea lions and the seals are protected by federal law, monitored by park rangers, and it's illegal to disturb them.  Access to the Children's Pool is closed due to pupping season but is set to reopen in May. "Right now that area is safe and quiet for them. It should be closed for good," Hahn said. 1391
