Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says an active-duty solider at Fort Leavenworth helped stop an active shooter Wednesday on the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River. In a news conference, Kitchens said the incident started on the Kansas side of the bridge. That's when a 34-year-old soldier from nearby Ft. Leavenworth stepped in and "saved the day" by striking the suspect with his vehicle, according to Kitchens."He saved countless people," Kitchens said.Kitchens said the suspect, described as a Platte County, Missouri man, was armed with at least a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle and was firing seemingly at random at cars on the bridge after getting out of his car.The suspect was injured in the crash with the soldier and was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.Another active-duty solider from Fort Leavenworth, was struck by the suspect's fire. That soldier's injuries were also not life-threatening.The soldier that stopped the shooter was not injured.Initially, police responded to the bridge around 11 a.m. on a possible road rage incident. The shooting incident was contained to the bridge and all parties have been detained. The Missouri Department of Transportation said the Centennial Bridge, which connects Leavenworth with Platte City, Missouri, has been closed for the investigation. 1348

Illinois authorities say the more than 2,200 fetal remains found at the Illinois home of an abortion doctor who died this month were from abortions conducted between 2000 and 2002.At a news conference Thursday, Will County officials said it appears that all the abortions were conducted in Indiana at a time when Dr. Ulrich Klopfer was working in that state. They said that the fetal remains will be sent to Indiana, where authorities there are investigating.State's Attorney James Glasgow says Will County authorities will cooperate with Indiana investigators but it appears that the only laws that Klopfer may have violated were on disposal of fetal remains and failing to do required paperwork.Officials declined to say how they know the abortions were performed in those years.Meanwhile, Kevin Bolger, an attorney representing the widow of Klopfer, said his client was unaware of the existence of the remains until after Klopfer died. 950

LATHROP, Calif. – It’s a common trope for firefighters to rescue cats from trees, but you rarely hear of dogs getting into that kind of sticky situation. However, that was the case for a German Shepard in Northern California on Saturday. The Lathrop Manteca Fire District says the pup chased a cat up a tree and then found itself stuck in the high branches. Luckily, firefighters with the department’s Engine 35 were called to the scene and managed to rescue the dog. Once on solid ground, the crews provided oxygen and water to the adventurous pup.“Glad to hear that all turned out well for this pooch, and we are all pretty sure he’ll think twice about chasing cats up the next tree...nice work Engine 35!” wrote the fire department. 746
