It adds to happiness of the anniversary of the People's Republic, and it brings the Expo 2010 Shanghai event to a new height. At the outset, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, warm welcome and sincere thanks to all distinguished guests attending the China National Pavilion Day events.Expo 2010 Shanghai is the first such global event hosted by a developing country in the history of the world expo. In the past five months, participants from 246 countries and international organizations have gathered by the Huangpu River to attend the Expo. The Expo site has hosted over 100 foreign leaders and nearly 60 million Chinese and foreign visitors. Together with the over two million dedicated volunteers from home and abroad, they have made "Better City, Better Life" a living reality. In the less than six square kilometer Expo Park, pavilions of diverse styles bearing distinct features of different countries stand alongside each other, hosting creative exhibitions and various cultural performances, not to mention the unique Urban Best Practices Area and the inspiring forum dialogues. Together, they form a vivid picture of the diverse world and the harmonious co-existence of different cultures and civilizations. We have every reason to believe that, with concerted efforts of all sides, Expo 2010 Shanghai will surely be a successful, splendid and unforgettable event. Let me take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to the governments and peoples of other countries, to the International Exhibitions Bureau and relevant international organizations, to all participants for their great support for the Expo and to all friends who have contributed their share to the Expo.Ladies and Gentlemen,Friends,Standing proudly in the Expo Park, the splendid and magnificent China Pavilion, the "Oriental Crown", is a showcase of "Chinese Wisdom in Urban Development". It is living proof of the effort by the Chinese people in pursuit of a better life. It gives expression to the long-lasting belief in harmony as rooted in the Chinese culture and to the vision of a brighter future of China through scientific development.The Chinese nation has a long history and a splendid culture. For over 5,000 years, generation after generation of the Chinese people of different ethnic groups have lived on this vast land. They have formed a fine character of diligence, courage and self-reliance. They are open-minded and inclusive. They dare to innovate and explore new ways of development. The contribution they have made to the progress of human civilization is significant and indelible.Over the past 60 years or more since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in an earth-shaking and pioneering endeavor and succeeded in bringing about three historic shifts: the shift from a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society to a new society of national independence, where people are the masters of their own country; the shift from a new democratic revolution to a socialist revolution and development; and the shift from a highly centralized planned economy to a robust socialist market economy and from a closed or semi-closed state to one of all-round opening up. These are indeed epoch-making changes of the Chinese nation. In the past 30 years since the beginning of reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained rapid growth rarely seen in the world. Our social programs have made progress. Our comprehensive national strength has increased significantly. Our people, on the whole, are leading a life of moderate prosperity, with the outlook of rural and urban areas steadily improving. We enjoy unity and amity among all our ethnic groups, harmony and stability in our society and continued rise in our international standing. China, once an ancient land, is taking on new vigor and vitality.Looking ahead, we will build a moderately prosperous society at a higher level by 2020 to benefit our over one billion people, and will realize modernization by the middle of this century. This is the grand vision and abiding goal of the Chinese people from generation to generation.The Chinese people, once plagued by poverty and hunger, long all the more for a life of prosperity and peace. HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday made proposals for boosting cooperation, especially in economy and trade, at a series of ongoing summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners including China, Japan and South Korea.He attended the China-ASEAN summit, the summit of ASEAN Plus Three, namely China, Japan and South Korea, and a meeting of the leaders of the three countries.Wen also held bilateral talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines.CHINA-ASEAN COOPERATIONWen and other leaders at the 13th summit between China and the ASEAN voiced their commitment to further strengthening their strategic partnership and comprehensive cooperation.Wen made a six-point proposal to further enhance the strategic partnership between China and Southeast Asian nations, saying the cooperation has been "most pragmatic, most extensive and most fruitful.""We should continue to pursue peaceful development through friendly cooperation" and must work together to ensure that "the China-ASEAN cooperation stay at the forefront of East Asian cooperation," Wen said.Topping the list of priorities is the further promotion of economic and trade relations between the two sides, Wen said.Wen said China will further expand imports from and facilitate trade with ASEAN members in the coming years in the hope of bringing the annual bilateral trade value to 500 billion U.S. dollars by 2015.ASEAN PLUS THREE SUMMITAt the ASEAN Plus Three summit involving ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea, Wen proposed that they speed up work on establishing the East Asia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and boost cooperation in finance and other areas."Stronger ASEAN Plus Three cooperation is essential to the revitalization of East Asia," Wen said at the summit.On the East Asia FTA, Wen said China, as the lead sherpa of the ASEAN Plus Three business cooperation, has put forward the roadmap for ASEAN Plus Three trade facilitation for the next five years."China will consult with other parties and propose specific measures to further advance trade and investment liberalization and facilitation within the region," he said.With China, Japan and South Korea each having their respective FTAs with the ASEAN in place, the three countries should move faster towards the establishment of a free trade agreement, Wen said.China, Japan and South Korea have decided to sign a tripartite investment agreement as soon as possible and complete the joint FTA study involving the government, industry, and academia by 2012, he said.Wen also called for efforts to deepen financial cooperation, saying that the two sides should make the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization more effective and improve its operation procedures.Meanwhile, those countries should probe ways to encourage cross-border bond transaction and settlement in the region, and intensify the capacity-building for the development of the bond market, he said.The premier also called for promoting cooperation in food security, agriculture, infrastructure construction and education.On food security, Wen said China stands ready to join efforts with all other parties to build the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve. He pledged a further 1 million dollars in donation to the reserve.Wen also urged the strengthening of communication and coordination among the ASEAN Plus Three on major international issues, and pushed for positive outcomes at major international conferences like the G20 summit.

Beijing, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered Thursday in Beijing for a high-level meeting on cooperation on children's rights in the Asia-Pacific region.Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), called for collaboration among Asia Pacific countries in protecting children's rights in a speech delivered at the meeting.Lake said,"We are already seeing the benefits of cooperation in areas that cut across borders, from preventing the spread of disease, to addressing the effects of climate change, to increasing child protection, to improving education."During the three-day meeting, more than 180 representatives from 28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to discuss issues on children's welfare and protection and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), these being eight global anti-poverty objectives due to be accomplished by 2015.The meeting, scheduled from November 4 to 6, is hosted by the All-China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, China's Ministry of Commerce, and with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. That's in the interests of the two countries' people and benefits regional and world peace and stability," Wang said in an opening speech.Fatih Ceylan, deputy undersecretariat of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said China and Turkey hold similar views on many regional and international issues and have great potential for better cooperation.As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Turkey has worked together with China very well in issues related to Afghanistan, the Palestinians and Iran, he said.Zhang Yuyan, a scholar with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, suggested China and Turkey uphold the principle of " common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change and strive to increase the representation and voice of developing countries in international institutions.Kamer Kasim, vice president of Turkey's International Strategic Research Organization, said it's good for both China and Turkey to increase cooperation in security, energy, tourism and other areas.The forum was a part of a large-scale cultural event termed " Experience China in Turkey", which was held in Ankara and the Turkish city of Istanbul.The event, starting on Sunday and to last till the end of the month, covers nine major activities, including Chinese-Turkish political and economic forums, Chinese movie and television weeks, Chinese cuisine festival and exchanges between journalists and writers.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan Wednesday held phone talks with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Faye Locke and Trade Representative Ron Kirk to discuss expansion of China-U.S trade cooperation.Wang and Locke, who is also co-chair of the China-U.S Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), agreed to enhance the exchange of opinions between two countries and expansion of bilateral cooperation, to ensure the upcoming 21st JCCT would be able to make positive achievements, and contribute to promoting sound and stable development of the China-U.S relationship.The JCCT was established in 1983 as a platform for the two countries to promote trade relations and address issues of mutual concern. The 20th JCCT was held in east China's Hangzhou City on Oct. 28-29, 2009.
