PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) - Dramatic body camera video recorded on the first day of Northern California's Camp Fire shows a Butte County Sheriff's deputy in what he thought would be the final moments of his life. BCSO Deputy Aaron Parmley was driving down Pentz Road in Paradise when his vehicle became disabled due to the firestorm. Parmley got out to run to safety.Fearing that he was about to die, Parmley switched on his body camera to document the situation the morning of Nov. 8.Video shows Parmley walking near a home and down the middle of a road with burning embers surrounding him. Other people, including a nurse and police officer, were walking nearby. Parmley's struggle to breathe in the heavy smoke is apparent. The life-saving moment happened roughly an hour and 14 minutes after Parmley turned on his camera. A bulldozer approached Parmley and the police officer, and both men got inside to be taken to safety. The Camp Fire went on to become the deadliest fire in California history, with 88 fatalities and 196 people missing as of Nov. 29. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - R.J. Donovan State Prison houses some of California’s most infamous inmates but is now getting attention for testing innovative rehabilitation methods. One of the projects is an ambitious, 1,000-foot long mural scaling the concrete walls of part of the prison known as Echo Yard. It’s being spearheaded by inmates Erik and Lyle Menendez. The two gained notoriety in the 1990s for their highly publicized murder trial, when they were convicted of killing their wealthy parents in their Beverly Hills home. At trial, they told jurors it was motivated by years of sexual abuse from their father.READ: Donovan State Prison's 'Echo Yard' takes innovative approach to rehabilitation, reduce recidivismAfter being convicted, they spent 20 years apart in separate prisons. But in April of 2018, they were reunited at Donovan State Prison in Echo Yard. 10News got a glimpse at their life together behind bars. Lyle and Erik declined to be interviewed but showed off part of the mural project they’ve been involved in.The mural depicts landmarks across San Diego including Balboa Park, the Point Cabrillo lighthouse and the historic Mission San Diego de Alcala. The project came about thanks to help from Brahman Kyrie, a volunteer who had been running yoga and meditation classes in the prison. “There’s got to be consequences but there also has to be the love,” said Kyrie. She said the idea of the murals came from a conversation with the Menendez brothers.“I spoke to Lyle and Erik who had been thinking about the beautification,” she recalled.WATCH: WHAT IS THE ECHO YARDWith the help of volunteers from SDSU and with outside donations from Visions Quality Coatings and Encore Art Paint, they began the project in 2019.Echo Yard is classified as a “mixed” yard, bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.“I do it for therapy, it keeps me grounded,” said inmate David Armstrong about the mural project.“It’s giving me a peace of mind,” echoed Ruben Radillo, an inmate who will be getting out of prison at the end of February after a 25-year sentence.“Don’t be afraid of me,” he said. “I’m going to be a good neighbor, thanks to projects like this. Absolutely.” 2277

PACIFIC BEACH (CNS) - A family fight ended with a man being stabbed today in Pacific Beach.Investigators say the relatives were in a park at Crown Point at midnight when an argument broke out. It's unclear what the disagreement was about, but a 25-year-old man ended up with two stab wounds, police said.``Everyone fled in different directions,'' said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department, describing how the family members dispersed along the 3700 block of Crown Point Drive. The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition, he said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SDPD Northern Division at 858-552-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 701

Payless Shoes emerged from bankruptcy in January, after closing all of their U.S. brick-and-mortar locations. Now, the company says they have plans to open a couple hundred new stores. The discount store chain relaunched their website in mid-August, featuring brands like LA Gear, Airwalk and American Eagle. They also announced they will be opening a new store location, with a redesigned layout, in Miami this November, with plans to open 300 to 400 stores in the coming years.Through the bankruptcy protection process, Payless continued to operate 700 international store locations.“We are fully aware that we’re relaunching in a time when many have lost their jobs, finances are tight, and parents nationwide are adjusting to working from home, facilitating at-home schooling for their children,” CEO Jared Margolis said in a statement. “We saw an opportunity for the brand to relaunch into the US market… at a time when value couldn’t be more critical.”Payless filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2019, less than two years after it emerged from a previous bankruptcy filing. 1096

People are taking a lot more road trips because their traditional travel plans have been canceled due to COVID-19.Many are renting RVs for the first time. RV rental website Outdoorsy said in May and June, 93% of their bookings were first timers.“The first thing I would say is don’t worry, you know a lot of the worry is up in your head, because these recreational vehicles looking larger and scary and intimidating to drive," said Jennifer Young, co-found and CMO of Outdoorsy.Young says owners renting on the website are willing to walk an RV newbie through the entire process. If you don't want to drive one, they can come to you and set it up.Insurance is covered for everyone when you rent online.First time renters should really focus on researching where they want to stay.“There are thousands and thousands of private RV parks, national parks, state level parks and BLM lands, free camping space available,” said Young.Depending on where you stay, there may be a fee. In terms of pricing, the average RV rental on Outdoorsy is around 1 per night. You usually only drive on the first and last day, so you're not spending a ton on gas. You can pack food to keep costs down. And to no surprise, those surveyed by Outdoorsy said they felt less stressed and the kids were happier on a road trip.“Spending time outside quite literally is the antithesis of being cooped up,” said Young. “Most of the time you spend when you're traveling is on the hikes exploring new places, checking out a river or a stream, going to a nearby town and just hanging out for the day.”Another popular option now is car camping, essentially packing up a smaller rented vehicle or your own car and sleeping outside. Borrowing or renting camping gear is another way to trim costs. 1768
