BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- As a large number of new sites were discovered during the most recent survey of national cultural relics, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong called for the careful filing and scientific preservation of all survey results on Tuesday.Liu made the remarks at a meeting of the third national cultural relics survey, which is expected to pave the way for improved rules on the protection of cultural relics.During the meeting, Liu hailed the current progress of the survey and extended her greetings to all who are working to preserve the nation's sites of cultural relics.Liu said the cultural relics survey is the foundation for protecting and putting to use the country's cultural relics in a scientific way, and is also a key part of evaluating the country's soft power.According to Liu, the on-spot investigation phase has finished, and "a large number of varied, new cultural relics sites" were discovered across the country.Though without overall figures, Liu revealed that newly discovered sites covered fields such as the history of the Party and the period of the revolution, the industrial heritage and traditional rural architecture, as well as others fields of study.The survey, which began in April 2007, will continue until December 2011.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rescuers to race against time to search survivors after catastrophic mudslides hit a northwest China county and left nearly 1,300 people missing Sunday.At least 127 people have been confirmed dead and 1,294 others were reported missing in rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning."For those who were buried under the debris, now it's the most crucial time to save their lives," Wen stressed during a meeting held at the county government late Sunday night.He said the search and rescue work must not be halted as long as the possibility for finding survivors still exists.He instructed the rescuers to locate places where most people were buried or trapped and to clean the sludge as soon as possible.Wen also demanded that traffic, power supply and telecommunication in the county should be resumed as soon as possible."And people who have been evacuated should be taken good care of," Wen stressed.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China values its traditional friendship with Zimbabwe and hopes to push forward relations between the two countries as well as the two armed forces, said Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie here on Sunday.Liang made the remarks in a meeting with Zimbabwean Commander of Defence Forces Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.Liang hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua)-- The amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) into China in May rose by 27.48 percent year on year to 8.13 billion U.S. dollars, said Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Saturday.The figure brought the country's FDI to 38.92 billion U.S. dollars in the first five months, an increase of 14.31 percent from a year earlier.Yao said that in the first five months, FDI mainly flowed into the manufacturing sector, accounting for 47.32 percent of the total, despite a fall of 3.85 percent in the amount.The service sector saw actual inflow of the FDI up 32.05 percent from a year earlier, while FDI in the primary sector, including farming, fishery and forestry, rose 85.49 percent year on year, which accounted for 1.63 percent of the total FDI in the first five months.China approved the establishment of 9,638 overseas-funded ventures in the first five months, up 22.15 percent from the same period of last year.In May alone, the government approved 2,132 such companies, representing a year-on-year increase of 29.29 percent.
