Thieves plant skimming devices at gas stations and ATMs to steal your card info, but according to Delray Beach Police Detective Kimberly Mead, that is only half the battle scammers face.Next, they need to find a card with a magnetic stripe to hold the information."Anything that has a magnetic stripe on the back can be turned into a credit card,” Mead told WPTV. “Hotel keys, gift cards, gas station cards, anything that has a magnetic stripe."This includes lost, stolen and seemingly useless cards thrown away in the trash.“They are just going to be a piece of plastic to someone, but if [scammers] have a credit card number, which they obtained through the internet or from a skimming device, they can input that information onto the magnetic stripe [using a card reader],” Mead said. “Now that card is useful to them again.”Recently, Mead busted a Florida man for reprogramming credit cards with stolen information. “We see this quite frequently,” Mead said.In her most recent case, Mead says she was tipped off when the credit card number on the receipt didn't match the numbers written on the front of the card.Then, using the same type of card reader thieves use to re-encode magnetic stripes, Mead checked the internal data on the man’s credit cards. “When we swiped the magnetic stripe, the number that showed up on the screen did not match the number that was embossed on the front [of the cards],” she said.So what can you do? “This kind of activity goes hand-in-hand with skimming,” the Florida detective said. “Pay attention to the ATMs you’re using, the gas pumps you’re using.”Actively monitor your charges through online and mobile banking apps, and think twice before tossing any card with a magnetic stripe.“Cut it up or shred it,” Mead said. “Don’t just toss it in the trash.”Anyone can purchase a credit card reader. DENVER — On World Autism Awareness Day Tuesday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill that expands medical marijuana use. Advocates have been fighting for two years to add autism to a list of qualifying medical conditions in Colorado.“I definitely believe it’s going to help kids for many reasons," said Michelle Walker, a parent of an autistic child who has other conditions that qualified him for medical marijuana. "One of the biggest reasons is I’ve seen it. I’ve seen my son’s life change. I’ve seen our family’s life change. It’s done a 180, and we’re not the only ones."Walker and her family moved to Colorado for the sole reason of obtaining medical marijuana for her son. He was able to start using medical marijuana to treat his seizures but said she also noticed a difference in his overall behavior."So I know it is an option for others and that it can be a beneficial option," Walker said.Walker and other families were at the Colorado State Capitol last year when a similar bill was vetoed. Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper did not sign off on the bill because he said more research was needed."It was heartbreaking," she said. "I cried, and my son has access, but to look in these families eyes after they had fought so hard, it was crushing."Those parents cried happy tears when Polis signed the bill on Tuesday. COLORADO — Riders on rentable scooters getting them from Point A to Point B around cities in America may not be thinking about something big: The germs.When our reporters talked to folks riding on them, they guessed the handles could be pretty germ-ridden.Our reporters looked at public bikes, too, and did some swab tests, which were taken to a lab. The goal was to find out what bacteria may be found on the scooters.The team tested for stapholococous, E. coli, general bacteria levels, yeast and mold.The results were surprising.“My initial action was surprise,” said Microbiologist Helene Ver Ecke, of Metro State University. "You have normal yeasts and molds on our hands we ingest yeast and mold, that's what makes us bread and beer and all kinds of things. So not all fungus are bad,” Ver Ecke said.The tests make the germ issue seem pretty bad, but there is bacteria everywhere, and it’s not all bad, she said.People were surprised there wasn’t more bacteria.Ver Ecke said it’s because there isn’t food present, which would provide moisture for bacteria to feed on. The bacteria is probably going away pretty quickly, she said."The variation that we've seen may be indicative of how long a time period it was since the last person rode it,” Ver Ecke said.Cleaning it off may be a waste of time, she said.
