SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least two teachers are on leave pending investigations at Southwest Middle School in Otay Mesa West. A spokesperson for Sweetwater Union High School District confirms the investigations, saying the teachers are not allowed on campus at the current time.10News uncovered the investigations when a viewer reported that his daughter had been interviewed in the case. He says an assistant principal questioned her about one teacher's behavior, including conduct that could be considered sexually inappropriate.The father, who asked 10News not to use his name, says he's upset that he was not notified by the school before his daughter was brought in for questioning. "I would have preferred my wife to be there, or I could have had the chance to say no, I don't want her interviewed because these are very serious, morbid conversations to have with 12-year-old girls," the father said.He says the only communication he has had from the school is a robocall voicemail the day after the questioning to notify him that it had occurred and suggesting he ask his student about the topics discussed.A district spokesperson says they are limited in what information can be released by privacy and personnel issues. 1233

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cruise ship cancellations amid the Coronavirus pandemic have cost the region more than 0 million in lost economic activity, according to the Port of San Diego.The Port says since March, 75 cruises have canceled, meaning a 6 million loss in retail, restaurant, lodging and related transportation and shipping services. The 2020-2021 season, which was supposed to start Sept. 13, has already seen 49 cancellations. "When it’s safe for sailings to resume, we will do what we can to work with and support our cruise and public health partners to ensure the safety of cruise passengers, terminal staff, and the public," the Port said in a statement. The loss is hitting tourism-related businesses, already suffering from a loss of conventions, and social distancing restrictions. Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental Hotel San Diego, just steps from the terminal, said cruisers usually stay a night pre or post cruise."It's still an amount of business that comes, which is beneficial," he said. "They're on leisure, and those people usually like to dine out and enjoy things."The CDC has halted cruising through at least Sept. 30. If that expires, San Diego's next arrival would be Nov. 5 through the Carnival Miracle. Some European cruise lines have once again started sailing, with capacity limits and social distancing restrictions.
