(KGTV) — Jurors have reached a verdict in the trial of a documented Escondido gang member accused of killing a passing motorist while attempting to shoot rival gang members.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was charged with murder in connection with the death of 55-year-old Catherine Kennedy.Friday, jurors found Torrez Jr. guilty of first-degree murder with a special-circumstance gang allegation, attempted murder, and shooting at an occupied vehicle. (CNS) - A suspected unlicensed and intoxicated driver who allegedly struck and killed a Fallbrook woman while she was walking with her husband, then fled the scene and sold the involved vehicle, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.Pascual Cristobal Pascual, 34, of Fallbrook, is accused in the Dec. 10 death of 60-year-old Symone Conley, who was struck by a pickup truck that veered out of a traffic lane on Gird Road near Laketree Drive and jumped a curb, according to the California Highway Patrol.Conley died at the scene.Following the deadly impact, the motorist pulled over and remained in the area for a short time before driving off, the CHP reported.Deputy District Attorney David Uyar said Pascual purchased alcohol about 15 minutes prior to the deadly crash and purchased more alcohol during the weekend following the crash.Pascual was arrested three days after Conley's death, but not before he allegedly sold the vehicle involved in the crash."Not only has he demonstrated his willingness to flee and evade justice, but also to attempt to destroy evidence in the process," Uyar said.Investigators identified Pascual as the alleged hit-and-run driver based on physical evidence at the scene of the traffic fatality, statements from the victim's husband and "numerous calls and leads," CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.At his arraignment, San Diego Superior Court Judge Amalia L. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— The new virtual school year comes with challenges for many students, but one nonprofit is teaming up with a Virginia Beach business to help give kids the space they need to succeed.“When children have a place to sit down and learn, they’re going to do much better,” said George Melnyk Jr., President of Premier Millwork and Lumber Company.Melnyk’s wife, Kim, is a Virginia Beach School Board member. They decided to take on a project to make desks for CHIP, a child readiness non-profit advocacy program.“They’re going primarily to low-income homes, kids that just need a desk,” said Trish O’Brien, President of CHIP of South Hampton Roads.Machines and manpower are churning out the pieces that will become desks for hundreds of CHIP families.There’s no hardware, no tools, just four pieces that easily interlock in under a minute to create a temporary space that a child can call their own at no cost to mom and dad.“At the end of the day, they can disassemble them, slide them under the couch, stick them in the closet, put them away for the weekend, and then the next day, put them back together and be ready to work,” said Melnyk.Each desk cost .50 to build thanks to employees who are donating their time to keep labor costs at zero.Last Saturday, the crew built 110 desks. (KGTV) – Infamous horse jockey Patrick Valenzuela pleaded guilty in court to domestic abuse, admitting to hitting his girlfriend at Fidel’s Restaurant in Carlsbad in September.He’s one of the most decorated thoroughbred horse jockeys with more than 4,300 wins. In 1989 Valenzuela won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, a seven-time winner of the Breeders' Cup races.But he’s been sidelined on the track for personal and drug abuse problems and fined 28 times in his career.His California license was permanently revoked at one point. Prosecutors say he smacked his girlfriend in a jealous rage for hugging a bartender.In a surprise move, his girlfriend addressed the judge, asking him not to issue a protective order that would keep Valenzuela away from his girlfriend. Prosecutors say he grabbed his girlfriend’s cellphone and hit her face causing her ear to go numb.They also say he chased her to her car and beat on her windows and that she was afraid to let him in the vehicle. (KGTV) -- Certain businesses in Vista will be allowed to take their operations outdoors in light of the state’s COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions.Vista officials said a Temporary Emergency Order was issued Wednesday “to relax outdoor use for personal care services, salon and barber shop services, and gym and fitness services to temporarily relocate their existing business operations to an adjacent outdoor area during the COVID-19 pandemic.”The city’s order comes as indoor operations across the state shut down -- effective July 15 -- for gyms, houses of worship, non-critical office businesses, hair salons and barber shops, indoor malls and personal care services.Vista businesses that would like to move services outdoors are asked to contact the city’s Economic Development Department at 760-639-6165 or via email at EconDev@CityofVista.com.In a statement, Vista Mayor Judy Ritter said, “It’s a top priority for the City of Vista to do everything we can to support our local businesses during this pandemic and still protect the health and safety of the community.
