BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said.The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.
BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's new yuan-denominated lending in November rose 7.8 billion yuan (1.2 billion U.S. dollars) year-on-year to 562.2 billion yuan, the People's Bank of China, the central bank (PBOC), announced Wednesday.New loans in the month were smaller compared to that in October, which stood at 586.8 billion yuan.By the end of November, the outstanding broad money supply (M2), which covers cash in circulation and all deposits, rose 12.7 percent year-on-year to 82.55 trillion yuan, according to data released by the PBOC.Meanwhile, the narrow measure of money supply (M1), which covers cash in circulation plus demand deposits, increased 7.8 percent year-on-year to 28.14 trillion yuan by the end of last month, the figures showed.New yuan deposits last month fell sharply to 324.7 billion yuan, down 262.6 billion yuan year-on-year. Outstanding yuan-denominated deposits totaled 79.51 trillion yuan as of the end of last month, up 13.1 percent year-on-year, however, the growth rate was 6.5 percentage points lower compared to the same period last year.Meanwhile, outstanding foreign currencies-denominated deposits stood at 266.8 billion U.S. dollars, up 12.9 percent year-on-year. New deposits of foreign currencies rose 4.1 billion U.S. dollars year-on-year.
BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China restored 23,000 hectares of wetlands in 2011, according to the latest figures from the State Forestry Administration (SFA).An SFA spokesman said China reinforced wetland protection in 2011 by increasing subsidies in protecting wetlands. In the year the country carried out 42 wetland protection projects, increased 330,000 hectares of protected wetland areas, added four wetlands of international importance and 68 national wetland parks.The spokesman said in 2012 the country will further step up wetland protection and restoration, finish the second national wetland resources investigation and carry out pilot projects in assessing healthy conditions of the wetland ecological system.So far China has built more than 550 wetland natural reserves, 37 wetlands of international importance, which were listed in the Ramsar international wetland convention, and 100 national wetland parks. About half of the country's natural wetlands have been brought under effective protection, the SFA said.
