Members of the LGBTQ community have taken over the Proud Boys hashtag on social media to send a message to the far-right group.The Proud Boys gained widespread media attention following last week’s presidential debate, during which President Donald Trump refused to condemn white supremacists. Though, he did denounce them two days later, amid mounting outrage.“I’ve said it many times, let me be clear again, I condemn the KKK. I condemn all white supremacists. I condemn the Proud Boys," Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity. "I don’t know much about the Proud Boys, almost nothing, but I condemn that.”It’s unclear who came up with the idea to reclaim “#ProudBoys,” but it seems the effort picked up steam when actor George Takei tweeted about it on Thursday.“I wonder if the BTS and TikTok kids can help LGBTs with this,” tweeted Takei. “What if gay guys took pictures of themselves making out with each other or doing very gay things, then tagged themselves with #ProudBoys. MENTOR, Ohio — Some northeast Ohio salon owners are concerned House Bill 189, which proposes cuts in mandatory cosmetology training, could create a potential public safety issue.The measure sponsored by State Representatives Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) and Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) calls for a reduction in training for cosmetology licensing from 1500 hours to 1000 hours.Bill proponents believe the measure will improve Ohio’s cosmetology laws by allowing more cosmetology graduates to enter the workforce earlier and with less debt, thus increasing entrepreneurship and bolstering the workforce for Ohio’s salons.But some local salon owners, like Jennifer Pealer with Jenniffer and Company Salon in Mentor, believe a reduction in required training can set-up future cosmetologists for potential salon mistakes. Pealer believes 1500 hours of training is needed to insure cosmetologists are prepared to use potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment on a daily basis."The biggest thing is public safety," said Pealer. "Hair damage can occur very easily without proper training. What happens is there is damage to the follicle, the hair breaks off, and if it's not reproduced, there could be balding."Salon owner Nancy Brown owns the Brown Aveda and Casal Aveda Institutes for cosmetology training in Northeast Ohio and believes HB-189, and its companion Senate bill, SB-129, are being considered for the benefit of chain salons, which provide quick hair cuts and not more technical services.Brown believes the measures sets cosmetologists up to be under-trained, and could also cut training for nail technicians to just 100 hours."The equipment we use requires training, the shears we use are sharp enough to perform surgery," said Brown. "Our curling irons at the professional level are 450 degrees. LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — A new national poll from The New York Times and Siena College shows that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has a nine-point lead over President Donald Trump.According to the poll that was released Tuesday morning, Biden leads Trump 50% to 41% among likely voters. That's a slight increase from a month ago when Biden led Trump 49% to 41% among likely voters."When we look at the presidential race nationally — not battleground states and the Electoral College — it is clear that despite the first presidential debate, a presidential coronavirus diagnosis and hospitalization and many other events, little has changed in the dynamics of the race, Dr. Don Levy, the director of Siena College's Research Institute. "Biden has a nine-point lead, right at 50%, up from eight points last month. He continues to have a positive favorability rating, as Trump's continues to be negative."While comfortably ahead in national polls, the 2020 presidential race will be decided by a series of key battleground states. Trump won the 2016 election despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton 46% to 48%.According to the poll, nearly one-third of voters have already cast their ballots. The poll found that 38% of Democrats have already voted, while 34% of independents cast their ballots, adding that only 20% of Republicans voted early."Nearly one-third of those likely to vote in the presidential election have already voted. Democrats and independents are much more likely than Republicans to have already voted at this point. Among the remainder of likely voters, half plan to vote in person on election day, one-quarter plan to vote in person before election day and one-quarter plan to vote by mail," Levy said."Among the 31 percent who have already voted, they support Biden by a huge 67-26 percent margin," Levy said. McDonald's is celebrating International Women's Day with a big, gleaming, W."For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches," said McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis.The giant arches have been physically flipped at just one California restaurant. As Baby Boomers age, and start losing loved ones, loneliness can take its toll.The issue is becoming such a concern some national organizations are stepping in.“This was the one thing I said when I retire, I want to do Meals on Wheels,” says volunteer Donna Reuss.Reuss has been volunteering for the organization Meals on Wheels for six years. She not only brings seniors a free meal, but she’s often the only person they really interact with for weeks at a time.“One of the things that really surprised me when I first started this was how many seniors live alone,” Reuss says.Loneliness can have a big impact on their health. Research shows that lacking social connections can be as harmful to someone’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.“It's a much bigger problem I think than people realize,” says Mary Lee Anderson, with Senior Services of Alexandria.Anderson’s nonprofit organization helps deliver food for Meals on Wheels. She’s helping with a new pilot project that lets volunteers delivering meals use a cell phone app to report any changes in behavior or concerns they notice while visiting with a senior.“It lets our volunteers, if they notice a problem, report it right on their phone,” she explains. “That information is sent back to us at the office and we can then contact the individual who is responsible, a family member or their city social worker if they don't have a close family member.”The pilot program is currently being tested in 10 cities across the country, and it’s expected to expand to another 50 cities early next year. 1619
