For dog owners, it can be a helpless feeling to see their pet panic. A newly approved drug hopes to help pets left paralyzed by the sound of fireworks and other loud noises.“We have all the way from very mild to very severe cases, where dogs are going through windows and escaping through crates during noise events,” says Dr. Amy Pike, a veterinary behaviorist.Dr. Pike is excited about a new drug, which was just approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help dogs who get stressed out by loud noises.The prescription drug is called Pexion, and it's part of a growing list of medications approved by the FDA to treat pets. The drug is given to dogs two days before an expected loud event, like the Fourth of July, as well as during the event.In a study, 66 percent of owners who gave their dog the pill say they saw good or excellent results.“I think it definitely has the potential to make a huge impact for some of these noise phobic dogs,” Dr. Pike says.However, there are downsides. The most common side effects are difficulty standing or walking, increased appetite and low energy.But dog trainer Juliana Willems is optimistic about the drug.“Everything that I’ve seen has been great and totally adding to the quality of life for these animals I’m working with,” says Willems. “I'm relieved to see that people are understanding the importance of medication in the behavior modification process.”Willems says to see the best results with the new pill, dog owners should use the medication in combination with behavior training, which could help everyone at home.“Humans have such a hard time with it, and a lot of time, I do just as much human counseling as I do dog training,” says Willems. “So, once the dog is behaving better, it improves. Four suspects that were allegedly involved in the murder of Baltimore County Police Officer Amy Caprio have been identified and charged as adults.Eugene Genius IV, 17, Darrell Ward, 15, Derrick Matthews, 16, and Dawnta Harris, 16, are all being charged with first-degree murder after Caprio, was run over by a car and killed on Monday. Genius, Ward, and Matthews are also facing first-degree burglary charges as well. On Monday, the teenagers were allegedly breaking into homes in the Perry Hall area when Caprio responded. Genius, Ward, and Matthews were reportedly inside a home when Caprio arrived.Harris was waiting in a Jeep Wrangler, and when Officer Caprio told him to get out of the car he allegedly ran her over and then drove away. After a multi-day manhunt, al four teenagers are in police custody.According to charging documents, Genius was arrested a day after the murder occurred and objected to his murder charges, saying that he was in the house when the murder happened. He added that he only knew two of the others involved, not all three. They all have a trial date of June 1. ????Harris has been charged with a series of carjackings, including stealing the vehicle that police say was used to kill officer Caprio. Police say Harris was under house arrest and wearing an ankle monitor at the time.Speaking at the District Court for Baltimore on Tuesday, the judge in the case said he wasn't sure any juvenile facility is secure enough to hold Dawnta Harris.Prosecutors said Harris was arrested four times for auto theft since December of last year.“This 16-year-old perhaps shouldn’t have been out (of jail),” Baltimore County Police Chief Terrence Sheridan said.Maryland Secretary of Juvenile Services Sam Abed said the court acted with the Baltimore City State's Attorney and the public defender to let him out on house arrest. “On May 10, there was a detention that the department was not privy a party to where the youth was released back to electronic monitoring,” Abed said.Between then and May 18, Abed said his compliance was poor and they requested that he be brought in.His mother had reached out to the court to let them know she couldn’t find him. “We attempted to contact the youth through his cell phone,” Abed said. “Went to his school and other places that we knew him to frequent to try and locate him. (AP) — A Northern California man posed as a woman on dating apps to lure men to a meeting place and then rob and carjack them, prosecutors said.Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office charged Hakeem Doeparker, 20, this week with multiple felonies, including second-degree robbery and criminal threats, attempted extortion and carjacking, The Fresno Bee reported Wednesday.Doeparker allegedly created female profiles on apps such as Skout and MeetMe! to connect with his victims. Prosecutors said he scheduled dates with the victims in Antioch, which is about 45 miles (72 km) northwest of San Francisco.He approached victims from behind, pointed a gun at them and threatened to shoot or kill them if they did not give him their money or car keys.The charges stem from incidents that occurred in June with four men, who all escaped unharmed. Doeparker successfully took money and two cars, which police later recovered.Doeparker, who is in custody, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday.Prosecutors believe there may be several additional victims.
