XICHANG, Sichuan, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched the "SinoSat-6" satellite for radio and television live broadcast at 12:14 a.m.Sunday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province. The satellite was carried on the Long March 3B rocket which took the SinoSat-6 into a geostationary transfer orbit 26 minutes after the launch. In the following days, Xi'an Satellite Control Center and Yuanwang tracking ship will manipulate the satellite's position and transfer it to enter the geostationary orbit.SinoSat-6 has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will eventually work at longitude 126.4 degrees east about 35,700 kilometers above the equator, said the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC), the satellite's researcher and producer. It will mainly serve for relaying TV and radio live broadcast signals and will greatly improve cultural life for people living in remote and mountainous regions, according to China Satellite Communications Corporation which will operate the satellite.China has launched the first SinoSat series satellite, SinoSat-1, in 1998. The SinoSat-2 was launched in 2006 but malfuctioned for it failed to deploy its solar panels and communication antennae.SinoSat-6 will serve as a substitute for SinoSat-3 which was launched on June 1, 2007, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations. It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao also attended UN conferences last year.During Wen's three-day stay here, he is expected to attend and address a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a summit of the UN Security Council member states and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and the MDGs.He will also meet with world leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Sino-U.S. friendship groups, overseas Chinese and foreign media in New York.About 140 heads of state and government will attend the three-day MDGs high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, where they will make new commitments to achieving the MDGs before the 2015 deadline. The MDGs, forged at a UN summit in 2000, includes eight ambitious goals, such as reducing extreme poverty in the world by half, cutting infant and maternal mortality, achieving universal primary education and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases which kill millions each year.In a joint interview with the UN-based Chinese media last week, UN chief Ban voiced his confidence in China to meet those goals on time and urged other world leaders to keep their promises on the MDGs.

YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday. Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters. The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped. An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident. The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The quota shift, or the voting power redistribution of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is just the start of IMF reform, a senior Chinese foreign affairs official said here Friday."G-20 leaders have pleged that progress should be made in terms of IMF quota reform prior to the Seoul summit, and now we will honor the commitment," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai at a news briefing on China's outlook for the G20 summit in Seoul next week.At a G-20 finance ministers' meeting held last month, participants agreed to shift six percent of the IMF quota to emerging or under-represented countries such as China, India and Brazil, from developed economies."This is obvious progress," Cui commented on the proposal forged at the minister-level meeting, adding that the Chinese side hoped the IMF's board would agree on the quota transfer."China is one of the under-represented countries and it's rational and sensible to give China more quota," said the vice foreign minister.China would not try to maximize its own interests, but seek an all-win situation with other emerging economies and other IMF members, Cui added.Cui said the quota shift was far from the end of the IMF reform and he looked forward to more changes to the financial institution."This is not the end, not even the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning," Cui said. Many countries have said that the way to calculate the quota itself needs to be reformed, as well as the IMF governance structure.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged authorities of a southeastern province to press ahead with its reforms and opening-up, and to embrace innovations in its economic development. In his four-day inspection tour in Fujian Province that began Friday, Xi spent time visiting high-tech enterprises, inquiring about villagers' incomes and held talks with university students.Efforts should be made to improve people's livelihood and solve practical difficulties for them with regard to employment, medical care, housing and children's schooling, Xi said during his visit to villages and urban communities. When visiting areas hit by June's torrential rains and massive floods, Xi urged local authorities to continue with disaster-relief work, rebuild damaged homes and agricultural infrastructures, as well as increase support for enterprises. In the coastal city of Xiamen, Xi urged government administrations in Fujian to take proactive measures to offer services to, and create "better conditions", for people from Taiwan.Further, efforts should be made to expand the scope and upgrade the level of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, he said.
