SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An inmate who left a San Diego re-entry facility on Wednesday was apprehended in the North County..California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said 51-year-old Larry Johnson “walked away from the Male Community Re-entry Program (MCRP) facility” on Boston Avenue in Barrio Logan Wednesday night.Staff at the facility learned Johnson’s GPS device “had been tampered with” at around 10:30 p.m. Johnson was last seen in the afternoon on an “approved pass to attend work.”Local law enforcement agencies were notified of Johnson’s disappearance, and CDCR agents fanned out to find him.At around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, CDCR officials said Johnson was taken into custody at a hotel in Carlsbad without incident. He will be transported and rehoused at Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility, officials said.CDCR officials said Johnson was in the midst of a 4-year sentence for one count of attempt to use an ID of another to obtain information, which was his second-strike offense.Johnson had been scheduled to be released to probation in May 2021. 1087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A simple gesture of kindness can make someone’s day or even save a life. “This one is Detecting Divas.” It all began with a book club. “That one is sisters of sleuth.”That Evie Arnold began hosting for seniors over a decade ago. “It’s all mysteries.”The women are all over 60.“There are so may single women that don’t have anybody, that I decided they should email me every day or text me every day just so I know everybody is ok.”But a couple of months ago, one of those emails didn’t come in.“I was making the change from landline to smartphone, but there was a glitch, I was without a telephone, deathy ill with no one to contact anybody.”Bookclub member Susan Lipp laid in her bed with no food, no water, just fear.“When you’re alone and you live alone with no family, I lay there and I thought after a couple days or so, I’m not going to get out of this. And I hope someone takes care of my kitties.”Evie called for a wellness check, and Susan was rushed to the hospital with a critical gastrointestinal condition.“She literally saved my life.”“It feels good to know that I’m 73 years old and I can still do good, be useful.”But that wasn’t the first time her compassion saved a life.When one neighbor's newspapers began stacking up, she knocked on the door only to hear the dogs barking and called for another welfare check.“I ran into her kids in the front yard and talked about time. I called the police on her, and they said you saved her life!”She urges everyone to pay attention to their neighbors, especially seniors.“Most police departments have volunteers that will take a look, and you might end up saving someone’s life too.”Susan believes everyone should join a book club. When she was in the hospital, the women cleaned her home, cooked meals and took care of her cats. 1816

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teenager is publicly apologizing after admitting to vandalizing a park in Scripps Ranch last December. Jerabek park was vandalized on December 8, 2018. Days later, the Scripps Ranch Civic Association offered a reward to find the person who vandalized the field. Neighbors said they believed a large truck drove in circles on the field, destroying the turf. In the association’s August newsletter, the unidentified teenager admits to vandalizing the grass. RELATED: Scripps Ranch community offers reward to find vandal who damaged field“I was at the park that night, along with some friends, and we thought it would be cool to drive on the grass,” the teen writes. “This poor decision caused damage that adversely affected many people who use that park and for that I am truly sorry,” the letter continues.
