HOLD THE DATE! We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Former Trump campaign official Rick Gates, who was charged in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, will learn how much his extensive cooperation with the Justice Department has paid off when he is sentenced in Washington’s federal court.Neither his lawyers nor federal prosecutors are seeking prison time for Gates, who pleaded guilty in February 2018 to charges relating to lucrative political consulting work he did in Ukraine. The Justice Department says Gates provided “extraordinary assistance” in multiple investigations and that prosecutors will not oppose his request for probation. The decision will be up to the judge, who is expected to sentence Gates on Tuesday.Gates is one of a half-dozen associates of President Donald Trump charged in Mueller’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. All six have either pleaded guilty or been found guilty at trial. The three who have already been sentenced have all received prison time. Two others, former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn and Trump confidant Roger Stone, are awaiting sentencing.Gates was among the first defendants charged in Mueller’s investigation. An indictment accused him and Paul Manafort, his onetime mentor and the chairman of the 2016 Trump campaign, of failing to disclose the work they did for then-Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and of hiding their proceeds from U.S. tax authorities to fund lavish lifestyles and pay for personal expenses.Gates pleaded guilty to charges of false statements and conspiracy against the United States, and he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. He has met with prosecutors more than 50 times, testified in three criminal trials — including the cases against Manafort and Stone — and admitted to crimes that the government didn’t already know about, according to a Justice Department court filing last week.“Gates’ cooperation has been steadfast despite the fact that the government has asked for his assistance in high profile matters, against powerful individuals, in the midst of a particularly turbulent environment,” prosecutors wrote. “Gates received pressure not to cooperate with the government, including assurances of monetary assistance.”____Follow Eric Tucker on Twitter at 2287

I.M. Pei, the Chinese born architect who was best known for designing the courtyard to the Louvre in Paris, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Kennedy Library in Boston, has died at the age of 102, the New York Times confirmed. The cause of Pei's death has not been announced. Pei moved to the United States at age 22, and learned from renowned architects such as Le Corbusier. Pei's first professional design was built in Atlanta in 1949. It was a simple mixed-used facility, which was torn down in 2013. In 1964, Pei was picked by John F. Kennedy's family to design his presidential library. The library ended up taking nearly 15 years to complete. In the 1981, Pei's design of the Louvre's pyramid courtyard opened to the public. During his career, he won many awards, including being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H.W. Bush in 1992. Pei was preceded in death by his wife Eileen of 70 years. 946
Former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather has offered to pay for George Floyd’s funeral and memorial services, and the family has accepted the offer. Mayweather personally has been in touch with the family, according to Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions. He will handle costs for the funeral on June 9 in Floyd’s hometown of Houston, as well as other expenses. TMZ originally reported Mayweather’s offer, and said he will also pay for services in Minnesota and North Carolina.Floyd was killed while in custody of Minneapolis police on Memorial Day. Bystander video shows Officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes while Floyd struggles to breathe. Chauvin remained on Floyd's neck for several moments after Floyd became unresponsive.Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder in connection with Floyd's death. Three other officers involved have been fired, but have not been charged. In a private autopsy conducted by Floyd's family, investigators found Floyd to have died of asphyxia due to neck and back compression. The family’s autopsy differs from the official autopsy as described in a criminal complaint against the officer. That autopsy included the effects of being restrained, along with underlying health issues and potential intoxicants in Floyd’s system, but also said it found nothing “to support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.” 1426
