(KGTV) - A Bonita family has been making gift bags for children in need for eight years and the pandemic this holiday season didn't stop them from spreading joy.Usually the assemblyline forms in Diane Zoura's garage the weekend after Thanksgiving. There's lots of friends, family and food to go around. This year the pandemic pushed them outside, under a tent a week later than planned."We are more spaced out this year, we set up outside, we’re taking temperatures, we’re all wearing masks so we’re just being more safe," Zoura said.They had to delay the event because a family member was sickened with the coronavirus weeks earlier. She said everyone is okay and they wanted to make sure everyone was safe when they did come together.Sunday, they were focused not on the pandemic, but on giving the gift of love and joy, a thousand times over."We’re going to give 400 of them to Build a Miracle and they’re going to hand them out to homeless children in Mexico and then we’re going to be giving the rest to the Polinsky Children’s Center for the foster kids in San Diego." Zoura said they wanted to send more gifts than last year.In 2019, they sent 750 gifts, in 2020 they'll distribute 1,000 and their ambitious goal for 2021 is 2,000 gifts. BALTIMORE — Baltimore Police are investigating a Friday night incident that left 54-year-old Jacquelyn Smith dead.At about 12:34 a.m., patrol officers were called to a Baltimore-area hospital for a report of a walk-in stabbing victim. When they got to the hospital, they found Smith with a stab wound to her chest.Despite the doctor’s efforts, she died.Investigators tell WMAR Smith and her family were driving in the 1000 block of Valley Street when they noticed a woman that looked to be about 20 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall and wearing a brown jacket. It looked like she was carrying a baby, or had something wrapped up to look like a baby, and was holding a cardboard sign that said, "Please help me feed my baby."Smith, who was in the passenger seat, rolled down her car window so that she could give the woman some money. At that moment, a man, about 30 years old and 6 feet tall with a goatee, approached the car to thank the family for the money.The male suspect then reached in to grab Smith's wallet, which is when a struggle began. Police say the man stabbed Smith in the torso before he and the female suspect that was holding the sign ran away."I'm not going to stop my car. You know, the way times are you don't know who to stop the car for," said Odella Taylor, a Baltimore resident."Think twice, look twice. I go to work early in the morning and my guards is up," said another Baltimore resident, Ellison Taylor.Police echoed that advice, saying crimes like these can happen any time."Always be aware of your surroundings. It doesn't matter if it's the middle of the day or the middle of the night. If you're driving, if you're walking, if you see something or someone that's suspicious, call 911, our officers work 24 hours a day," Jeremy Silbert of the Baltimore Police Department told WMAR.Homicide detectives are looking for the suspects. BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- An Indiana Sheriff's deputy who was shot while assisting police early Friday morning will not survive his injuries according to the Boone County Sheriff.  Deputy Jacob Pickett was critically injured in a shooting while assisting the Lebanon Police Department with a pursuit of a wanted individual. He is being kept alive on life support so that his organs can be donated. At least one other law enforcement officer on the scene returned fire, striking one of the suspects.Pickett was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where he was last listed in critical condition. The injured suspect, identified as Anthony Bumgarht, 21, is in stable condition at this time. Two other suspects, John D. Baldwin Sr., 55, and John D, Baldwin Jr., 28, both fled after the shooting. Baldwin Jr. was arrested a short time later after a wrong-way pursuit on I-65.   926

BROWNSBURG, Ind. -- Deputy Jacob Pickett of the Boone County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed in the line of duty last week after a shootout with a suspect during a car chase.Pickett is survived by not only his two young boys and wife, but by his K-9 partner, Brik, who was by his side on the day he was fatally shot.Brik honored his fallen partner at his funeral by stopping, alone, in front of Deputy Pickett's casket. And as a dog would, he wagged his tail, as a final salute to a man with which he had an unbreakable bond.Brik followed a K-9-only procession, going by Deputy Pickett's casket to pay their last respects for a fall comrade.You can watch video of the service in the player above.   731
