BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- More than 900 scholars, experts and representatives from business circle from around the world have gathered in Beijing to discuss remedies for the global financial crisis and the future development of the world economy.     They are attending the Global Think Tank Summit, which opened here Thursday evening.     Attendees to the summit included former President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, former Secretary of State of the United States Henry Kissinger, and Muhammad Yunus, laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize. MILAN, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in the Italian city of Milan on Monday for an official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), began his tour in Italy at the invitation of Italian Senate President Renato Schifani and Chamber of Deputies President Gianfranco Fini.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu said China is ready to work with Italy to maintain the sound momentum of practical cooperation so as to make contributions to overcoming the international financial crisis and spurring the recovery of the world economy. Wu Bangguo (R Front), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, arrives in Milan on May 18, 2009 at the start of an official goodwill visit to Italy    Wu is scheduled to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as heads of both houses of the Italian parliament and other Italian leaders to exchange views on bilateral relations and other regional and international issues of common concern.     Wu is also to visit a research and development center of the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), which shows China's interest in using European technologies to improve energy efficiency of its economy.     After Chinese President Hu Jintao's attendance at the London G20 summit in April and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe tour in January, Wu is yet another senior Chinese leader to visit Europe in the past few months.     Against the background of the worsening global financial crisis, Wu's visit highlighted the importance that China attaches to cooperation with Europe in addressing global challenges.     Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G8 group, will host a summit between the leaders of G8 nations and developing countries in June. Hu is expected to attend the meeting.     Wu's visit coincides with a G8 environment ministers meeting that is to be held in Italy on May 22.     China and Italy have witnessed smooth development of bilateral ties in recent years. Berlusconi visited Beijing for the Asia-Europe summit last October.     Besides Milan, Wu is also to visit Rome, Florence and Venice. Italy is the final leg of Wu's three-nation Europe tour, which had already taken him to Russia and Austria.

The two countries should exchange views on maintaining stability of their own financial market and pushing forward reform of the international financial and currency systems, Wu said, adding that China and Russia should join hands to promote the stability of international financial market and rally of global economy.     Medvedev said under the current situation, strengthening cooperation between Russia and China is not only conducive to the development of both countries, but also to resumption of world economy and establishment of a new, just and rational international political and economy system.     Medvedev said Russia places importance on expanding relations with China and is ready to deepen mutual trust and expand cooperation with China in such fields as energy, trade, investment and local contact.     China and Russia are to hold a series of activities to mark the60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic links this year. BEIJING, May 17 -- Shanghai will step up efforts to lure more talent, beef up development of its legal system and improve its credit database as part of efforts to develop a global financial center, Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao said Saturday.    The city will also enable financial markets and institutions to play an important role in financial innovation and make the Pudong New Area a pioneer for financial reforms, Tu told the Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai.     "To realize our goals, we need a combination of forces," said Tu. "We need guidance and support from the central government in terms of rules' drafting and coordination. We also need financial markets and companies to make contributions." One focus will be the establishment of a credit ratings system for small- and medium-sized enterprises to facilitate fundraising, Tu said.     Xu Lin, Party Secretary of Pudong New Area, told the forum the district will shore up its preparation for financial innovation, including establishing an over-the-counter equity exchange for start-up technology firms.     Pudong will also trial programs to settle cross-border trade using the yuan and to set up consumer finance companies to fund people's purchases of durables such as home appliances and electronics.     Xu also noted that Pudong will fast track the development of financial services for the shipping industry as China pursues building Shanghai into an international financial and shipping hub by 2020.     "The district will encourage capital from various sources to help innovation and upgrade industry," Xu said. "More credit support will be given to small companies in terms of innovation."     Financial experts attending the two-day Lujiazui Forum, which ended Saturday, called on the city to take more measures to retain talent and financial institutions.     "The major European and US markets are reshuffling after the crisis and it has created a good opportunity for Shanghai to lay a sound basis and infrastructure for rising as an international financial center," said Laura Cha, deputy chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp.     "We should learn lessons from them and avoid the mistakes they have made."     Shanghai is still lagging behind in terms of financial talent both in quality and quantity, she added.     She suggested shoring up the city's financial high education sector and rotating financial talents to develop more overseas experience.
