Dr. Jose Nieves has been a critical care physician on the frontlines as a hospital intensivist, working at two hospitals in South Jersey--Jefferson Washington Township and Jefferson Cherry Hill hospitals.“When this all first started, we knew things were starting to pick up in Seattle and New York, and you felt it coming down our way,” recalled Dr. Nieves.When the pandemic first struck in the United States, the doctor felt fortunate, because his hospital system had a chance to gather enough PPE gear, create a plan, and brace for it. However, when the surge started in his hospitals, he realized all the planning still could not prepare healthcare workers on the frontlines for what they were dealing with.“It was pretty terrifying,” said Dr. Nieves, “A lot of the stuff we had prepped and talked about in our own little training sessions, you know, was very much kind of like, I wouldn’t say thrown out the door, but it was a lot of rushed implementation of stuff we had never done before."As he would be working on one patient with COVID-19 symptoms, another would walk in. There were days when five potentially COVID-19 positive patients with severe symptoms were walking in at the same time. Physicians were working around the clock to try to save lives while trying to learn about the virus.“The people that were at home were just researching trying to throw data at the people that were in, and when you were in shift and they were out, they were doing the same thing,” said NievesDespite all their efforts, there were days they couldn’t save everyone, and those were the hardest. For Dr. Nieves and his team, the loss of a pregnant mother and her unborn child was the toughest.“Having that traumatic event occur, at an already high stressful level, the staff really had to be gathered around and supported, because people were in tears. It was devastating,” he explained.On top of that, he also couldn’t go home and get a much-needed comforting hug from his girlfriend, for fear of exposing her to the virus.“That, for me, started to hammer it home; that there really was no break from this,” Nieves added.Having no break from the virus coupled social distancing needed to curb its wrath, it was taking a toll on many healthcare workers around the country.“The toll for some people at some points was that they didn’t think that they could do this anymore, that this wasn’t going to be their profession any further and that is always hard to see,” said Dr. Nieves.Jefferson Health leaders saw the toll the pandemic was taking on staff and stepped in early on, leading town halls for workers to vent and offering counseling. Other hospital systems around the country are now doing the same. Seeing the toll the pandemic has had on healthcare workers, Dr. Nieves knows first-hand how important that is and will be for so many on the frontlines of this pandemic.“Doctors that you saw last year are not going to be the same mentally and emotionally in the coming years,” Dr. Nieves explained. 3007

Disney is allowing guests at Magic Kingdom to wear Halloween costumes for the first time during normal park hours.The park recently announced in a blog post that guests of all ages can wear costumes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31.In June, the park canceled its annual Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party because of the coronavirus pandemic.But this year, guests would be able to get into the Halloween spirit with costumes, themed foods, and merchandise, the park said.According to the park's website, costumes cannot contain sharp objects, they must be family-friendly, they can't have weapons, and anyone over the age of 14 cannot wear a mask with their outfit.Guests under the age of 13 can wear a mask, but it cannot cover the entire face, and their eyes must be visible.The park said costumes that "reach or drag on the ground" such as "full-length princess dresses" are not allowed.The park also added that all guests must still wear a face-covering while at the park. 978

(KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. (KGTV) - A man and a woman were taken into custody following a carjacking and a string of robberies targeting San Diego convenient stores early Tuesday morning.The crime spree started around 1 a.m. when the couple allegedly carjacked a victim in El Cajon.Minutes later, the couple drove to a 7-Eleven store near the intersection of San Carlos Drive and Bisby Lake Avenue, police said.A male suspect armed with a handgun walked into the store while the clerk was preparing the register for the day, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.CRIME NEWS: Man hospitalized following deputy-involved shooting in Lemon GroveThe armed man reached over the counter and took money out the register, then the suspect ran out of the store. The couple fled in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.Moments later, a second 7-Eleven was robbed in Spring Valley. According to police, the suspects drove off in a car matching the description of the vehicle used in the Lake Murray incident.The couple then arrived at a third store on North Euclid in National City. The 7-Eleven clerk at the store said they "had a bad feeling about the couple" and alerted police, officers told 10News.
