Users of Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant can now request that recordings of their voice commands delete automatically.Amazon says it saves such commands to improve the service. But the practice has raised concerns with privacy experts who say the recordings could get into the wrong hands, especially as Amazon and other companies use human reviewers rather than just machines.Previously, users had to go into Alexa’s settings and delete recordings manually. Users can now ask Amazon to automatically delete recordings after three months or 18 months. But users need to specify that in the settings, as recordings are kept indefinitely by default. And there’s no automatic option for immediate deletion. Users would still need to do that manually. When users ask for automatic deletion, a warning will pop up saying that doing so could degrade Alexa’s ability to respond or understand users.Amazon will also let users request deletions through an Alexa voice command. The use of human reviewers will continue.Tech companies have been reviewing their practices in light of privacy concerns. There’s greater concern when humans are involved because of the potential for rogue employees or contractors to leak private details embedded in the voice commands. When Facebook starts selling a new version of its Portal video-calling gadget next month, the company will resume using humans to review voice interactions with the device. Users will be able to decline, or opt out. People on existing devices will get a notification pointing them to the appropriate settings. New Portal users will get the option when setting up.Human reviews involving Facebook’s Messenger app elsewhere remain suspended as Facebook re-examines the privacy implications.Google is also 1769

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration says it will block Chinese airlines from flying to the U.S. later this month. The Transportation Department says it will suspend passenger flights by four Chinese airlines to and from the U.S. beginning June 16 — sooner if President Donald Trump decides to do so. It's the latest escalation of trade and travel tensions between the two countries. China so far hasn't allowed U.S. airlines United and Delta to resume flights to China, which they wanted to restart this week. Those flights were suspended earlier this year because of the coronavirus outbreak that started in China. The Transportation Department says China is violating an air-travel agreement between the two countries.“The Department will continue to engage our Chinese counterparts so both U.S. and Chinese carriers can fully exercise their bilateral rights,” said the agency in a statement 913

U.S. gasoline prices are becoming a real pain for motorists, particularly in the west.A survey of more than 5,000 gas stations conducted by AAA shows that the average price for a gallon of regular gas is now .75, up 11% in the last month. And the average price is already above a gallon in six western states: California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Alaska.Four-dollar gas is the average in a couple of California counties. Many others are within a few cents of that mark, including San Francisco, where the average price is .98. The statewide average in California is up 20 cents a gallon, or 5%, to .83 in just the last week. The Midwest has also been hit by price spikes. The average price in Chicago has jumped 46 cents a gallon, or 16%, to .27 in the last month.Unplanned refinery maintenance at several locations is responsible for the sudden, and uneven, increases across the nation, said Tom Kloza, head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service. Western states are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions because they have less refining capacity than other locations across the United States."The western half of the country hasn't added any refining capacity this century," said Kloza. "It's been a cluster of difficulties but not disasters hurting supplies, particularly out in the West."Kloza said -a-gallon gas will be common in California and perhaps in some other western states in the coming weeks. But most of the country could start to see some relief in gas prices soon as refineries along the Gulf Coast start to come back online from scheduled maintenance in the coming weeks. 1653

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Monday the U.S. will formally designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a Foreign Terrorist Organization."This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft," Trump said in a statement that described the IRGC as "the Iranian government's primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign."Iran warned this weekend that if the US went ahead with the designation, Tehran would retaliate by designating the US military as a terrorist organization in return.Iranian parliamentarian Seyed Jawad Sadatinejad told Iran's state-run FARS News on Saturday, "If any stupidity is carried out by the Americans, the Islamic Republic of Iran will practice reciprocity and designate the US military, which has killed many innocent people, to the list of terrorist groups." He said Iran could then treat US troops in the region the same way they treated terror groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda, reports FARS News. The designation will be the first time that the United States has ever named a part of another government as a foreign terrorist organization. 1317
