BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday extended congratulations on the launch of China-France high-level dialogue on people-to-people exchanges and the opening of its first session, held in Paris.

The two-day summit was hosted by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and chaired by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.

The agreement will cover 17 areas, including trade in goods and services, investment and trade rules, and topics such as e-commerce and government procurement.

To pursue a balanced, durable and comprehensive political settlement of the Ukraine issue, the international community should push the parties concerned to make full use of existing dialogue and liaison channels, strengthen communication, take actions conducive to the establishment of mutual trust and avoid confrontation, he said.

Delegates from more than 200 countries and international organizations attend the summit, including over 100 heads of state or government. Convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and themed "Catalyzing Action", the summit is expected to set the stage for the crucial Paris Conference.
