LOUISVILLE, Colo. — It's been five months since Jonas Asner's last trip home to Colorado. This visit has an important purpose."I had to fly home to vote," Asner said.Asner's parents, Chris and Lisa Hall, sent his ballot to North Carolina on Oct. 14, where Jonas goes to school. His father, Chris Hall, purchased priority mail through USPS. The ballot was supposed to arrive in two to three days. However, the deadline kept creeping closer and closer with no sign of the envelope.Fearing it wouldn't show up on time, the family was determined to get his vote in."It just became very clear that there was only one way our child was going to be able to vote and that is if you came here to vote," said Asner's mother, Lisa Hall.Asner flew from North Carolina to Colorado Sunday night, voted Monday, and flew fly back Tuesday morning."It was definitely cool to vote in my first presidential elections as a milestone in my life," Asner said.Asner says his parents emphasized the importance of voting."To be able to have a voice in my country is really important to me," Asner said.Editor's note: This story was produced with the help of tips reported through ProPublica's Electionland project. If you experience or witness a problem voting, please let us know. This story was first reported by Gary Brode at KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 1335

McDonald's is sweetening up its breakfast menu by adding three new items. The fast-food chain announced Wednesday that beginning Oct. 28, consumers will be able to order blueberry muffins, cinnamon rolls, and apple fritters from its menu.McDonald's said the new items would be available all day.For the first time in eight years, the sweet treats are the first addition of bakery items to the chain's core menu, joining cookies and pies."McDonald's has been famous for our savory breakfast menu for almost fifty years," said Linda VanGosen, Vice President, Brand and Menu Strategy, McDonald's USA in the news release. "We're continuing our breakfast innovation by adding tasty new sweet options with our new McCafé Bakery lineup. We know our customers deserve a break now more than ever and are excited to give them another reason to visit their favorite breakfast destination by offering delicious flavors they crave, any time of the day."McDonald's said their breakfast menu has evolved throughout the years. The Egg McMuffin was introduced in 1971, followed by their breakfast burritos 20 years later. McDonald's then introduced McGriddles in 2003, and their McCafé coffee in 2009.McDonald's added that they plan to serve 100% cage-free eggs by 2025. 1259

Mila Kunis donates money every month to Planned Parenthood under the name of Vice President Mike Pence, she recently told talk show host Conan O’Brien. Her repeated donation under Pence’s name is not a “prank,” she said, but a way to peacefully protest while supporting the organization."I don't look at it as a prank," Kunis said. "I literally -- I strongly disagree -- and this is my little way of showing it. It's a peaceful protest."Before she went into detail about her donations, the former “That 70s Show” star told Conan that she might get “a lot of hate mail” and she apologized if her actions offended anyone."It's not so much a prank as much as I disagreed with some of the stuff that Pence was doing and was trying to do," Kunis said."So as a reminder that there are women out there in the world that may or may not agree with his platform, I put him on a list of recurring donations that are made in his name to Planned Parenthood."This was met with loud applause from the audience."Every month, to his office, he gets a little letter that says, 'an anonymous donation has been made in your name,'" Kunis said. 1130

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida — Manatee County leaders are changing an EMS policy after a heart attack victim’s body was left sitting in a public park for three hours, while his widow was forced to sit with his body.Ty Ross was walking his dogs at the Palma Sola Marina when he dropped to the ground and from a heart attack. Deputies and EMS quickly responded, and pronounced him dead just before 8:45 a.m.Per county policy, EMS left after life-saving attempts were no longer needed — leaving the body behind.A Manatee County deputy kept the public away while they waited for the funeral home to arrive. The sheriff's office was not able to transport the body anywhere since it wasn't involved in a crime. When officials were able to get ahold of Julie Ross, who had her cell phone turned off, she rushed to the scene. When she arrived about 90 minutes later, she was forced to wait next to her dead husband's body for another hour and a half until the funeral home was able to come pick up her husband's body."If the ambulance is there, they shouldn't just go off and leave him!" You know? They should do something," Ross said. "I'm just thinking there must have been something else that could've been done besides just leaving him there. That seems so cold."Family members expressed concerns over EMS leaving the deceased at the scene with only a sheet to cover him. Wondering why they did not transport his body to a funeral home or morgue."Sitting over there with an umbrella over him, worried about red ants, it seemed forever," Ross said. Manatee County Sheriff’s spokesperson Dave Bristow says the Sheriff along with the EMS Chief are changing the county’s policy after this incident. From now on, paramedics will put a body in the back of the ambulance until the funeral home arrives. Bristow says this new policy only applies when someone dies in a public place.Ross knows she can never get her husband back, but she’s relieved another family won’t go through this."I’m just glad to see that the county moved once they heard about it." 2071
