Even that rate, about 1 percent, has been climbing rapidly in recent years — from 0.6 percent in the United States in 2007, for example.“From the get-go we had the feeling that we would find a higher prevalence than other studies because we were looking at an understudied population: children in regular schools,” said the lead researcher, Dr. Young-Shin Kim, a child psychiatrist and epidemiologist at the Yale Child Study Center.By contrast, other research groups measure autism prevalence by examining and verifying records of existing cases kept by health care and special education agencies, but leaving out many children whose parents and schools have never sought a diagnosis.Kim said the researchers concluded autism prevalence estimates worldwide may increase if rigorous screening and comprehensive population studies are used to produce prevalence estimates.But it is suggested the findings did not mean that the actual numbers of children with autism were rising, simply that the study was more comprehensive than previous ones.

LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Clinical and teaching microbiology laboratories are linked with a nationwide salmonella outbreak in the United States that has killed one person and sickened dozens of others, health officials confirmed on Friday.Since August, about 73 people in 35 states have been sickened by salmonella bacteria, and some of those cases involve a strain of Salmonella typhimurium sold commercially to laboratories, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in remarks published by msnbc.com.Illnesses have been tied to laboratories from Alaska to New York, with most reporting one or two cases. Five cases have been reported in Washington state and four in Minnesota.The first illness occurred late August and the most recent cases were reported March 8, according to the CDC.The patients include employees and students of the laboratories, as well as children in the homes of people who work or study at the labs.Patients ranged in age from less than one to 91, with a median age of 24, the CDC said.Cases that developed after March 19 may not yet be included in the total because of the lag time in assessing and reporting illness, said the report.CDC officials warned that bacteria used in the labs can be transmitted through contaminated lab coats, pens, notebooks, car keys and other items brought into the labs.The CDC is working with local and state health departments, the American Society for Microbiology and the Association of Public Health Laboratories to track the outbreak, the report said.Salmonella infections typically result in diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. GENEVA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The world is ill-prepared to respond to a severe influenza pandemic or to any similarly global, sustained, and threatening public health emergency, an independent expert-committee entrusted by World Health Organization (WHO) said at its fourth meeting here on Monday.The Review Committee, tasked to look into the experience gained in the global response to the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in 2009, issued its preliminary report at the meeting.In the report, the Committee said, "global preparedness can be advanced through research, strengthened health-care delivery systems, economic development in low and middle-income countries and improved health status."It recommended that international society establish an extensive global public health reserve corps consisted of experts and public health professionals, which could be deployed to support countries in need, in case of future pandemics.Another suggestion was to create a contingency fund for public health emergencies to be held in trust at an institution such as the World Bank, in order to provide financial support during a declared public health emergency of international concern.The report also urged WHO member states to reach an agreement on sharing of viruses and access to vaccines, and encouraged them to run independent or cooperative influenza research program.WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said at the opening of the meeting that the report had offered "critical guidance to all ministers of health who need to make far-reaching decisions."She said the recommendations in the report would help to " improve the capacity of WHO and the international community to respond to public health emergencies" and therefore should be taken with "added urgency."In January 2010, WHO's Executive Board established a Review Committee, at Chan's proposal, to review the experience gained in response to the H1N1 pandemic, as well as the International Health Regulations and WHO's functioning in tackling the disease.The Committee is expected to prepare its final report out of the current preliminary version, and submit it to the decision- making body of WHO in May.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The world's leading hard rive producer Western Digital Corp. on Monday announced that it has agreed to buy Hitachi Ltd.'s hard disk drive unit for about 4. 3 billion U.S. dollars, a move that will create a dominant player in the industry.Western Digital said that it plans to acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., in cash and stock.The proposed combination will result in a customer-focused storage company with the industry's broadest product lineup backed by a rich technology portfolio, Western Digital said.According to their agreement, the resulting company will retain the Western Digital name and remain headquartered in Irvine in the U.S. state of California.The transaction has been approved by the board of directors of each company and is expected to close during the third quarter of 2011.With the purchase, Western Digital will claim 49.6 percent share of global hard disk drive unit shipments based on latest quarterly statistics, compared to 29.4 percent for Seagate Technology LLC, the industry's No. 2 supplier, research firm iSuppli pointed out.The deal will give Western Digital a lead of 20.2 percentage points over Seagate, up from a mere 2 points without the acquisition, iSuppli said in a research note released Monday.The acquisition will also allow Western Digital to enter the critical enterprise hard disk drive segment, where it currently is only a marginal player.Analysts believed that the purchase might be a consequence of declining hard disk drive shipments, which are being impacted by the rising sales of tablet computers, which don't use hard disk drives and are cutting into the sales of mobile PCs, a major market for hard drives."Amid weaker industry conditions, organic sales growth is more difficult to achieve, prompting hard disk drive suppliers to engage in acquisitions to gain market share," iSuppli noted.
