SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests.The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff. They added that, throughout the protests and riots, no one had time off, and that all vacation time was canceled during the unrest.The news comes after rioters set fire to several buildings and vehicles in La Mesa in late May.Several stores were also looted, including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores and shopping centers. 737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego District Attorney's Office announced a new program Thursday that would send low-level offenders to the classroom instead of a jail cell.The Community Justice Initiative requires 12 hours of cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as four hours of community service. The participant then has their case dropped and their record sealed. They wouldn't have to report an arrest on any future job application."Some people deserve second chances," DA Summer Stephan said.The program started in the South Bay in April 2018, expanded to the East County in January 2019, then North County in May. It's funded in part by the county, grants, and 0 from each criminal."That amount is less than any fine they would have gotten on any case," Stephan said.So far the program has seen 586 participants. 296 of them completed the program.Director of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adult Justice Programs and Social Worker Laura Soto spoke of one of her patients who completed the program, "she [Amanda] began to spend more time with her son, she got a diploma and she got an office job, and then she started cosmetology school."Amanda was arrested for stealing. Through the program she shifted her mindset away from entitlement."Amanda began to think about the consequences, and things to be grateful for and that made her happy," Soto said."The most common offenses in the program are in fact shoplifting, non DUI traffic violations or vandalism,." Stephan said only non-violent and non-sexual offenders qualify."Misdemeanor convictions can have damaging affects that last a lifetime," she added. Stephan said criminals will continue turning to a life of crime if they can't find a way out.10News asked Stephan what she would say to critics who believe this program could incentivize criminal behavior. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three rescued pilot whales have been transported to San Diego to continue their recovery from a mass stranding in 2012.SeaWorld San Diego welcomed 7-year-old short-finned pilot whales — Ace, Ava, and Piper — to the park Monday from SeaWorld's Orlando park. The three whales are the only surviving pilot whales from a mass stranding event near Fort Pierce, Fla., in 2012.The trio was rescued and rehabilitated by SeaWorld Orlando, but the National Marine Fisheries Service determined the three whales couldn't be returned to the wild since they were dependent calves at the time of their rescue.The whales will also join Argo, a pilot whale rescued after stranding on a beach near Kamogawa, Japan, in 2004. Argo was transported from Japan to San Diego in 2012.The new pilot whales are currently adjusting to their new habitat at the Dolphin Amphitheater and will be introduced to Argo over the next several days, SeaWorld says.As part of the transport, two of SeaWorld San Diego's beluga whales have been relocated to SeaWorld San Antonio. 1065
