A Houston police officer was killed Tuesday and a second officer was injured on Tuesday morning in what Police Chief Ralph Acevedo called a "domestic violence-type situation."The officer killed was Officer Harold Preston, 65, a 41-year-old police veteran. Acevedo described Preston as a great cop "and a better person."According to Acevedo, officers were called to a home in the city's southwest side of the city by a woman who described herself as the estranged wife of the man who lived there. She said she was moving out and needed to collect her belongings, but her husband wouldn't let her in the house. When police approached the door, the suspect allegedly fired at the officers. Preston was shot multiple times in the head. A second officer, Officer Cortney Waller, was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive.Several hours after police first arrived, the suspect emerged from the house and exchanged gunfire with police. The suspect, idnetified as Elmer Manzano, 51, was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive. Acevedo said Manzano will likely be charged with murder.Manzano's son was also injured in the incident and was transported to a local children's hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.KTRK-TV in Houston reports that Tuesday's shooting comes days after a Houston Fire Department Arson Investigator was shot and killed while doing surveillance in the northwest side of the city. 1432
A Georgia school decided on Thursday to reverse its decision it made earlier in the week to end the practice of students participating in the Pledge of Allegiance during all-school assemblies, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier in the week, Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School said that the pledge would no longer be recited in such assemblies after some parents and students expressed concerns. The school said that it wasn't outright banning the Pledge of Allegiance from being recited during school hours, but moving the pledge to the school's classrooms. “Over the past couple of years it has become increasingly obvious that more and more of our community were choosing to not stand and/or recite the pledge," principal Lara Zelski said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "There are many emotions around this and we want everyone in our school family to start their day in a positive manner. After all, that is the whole purpose of our morning meeting.” By late Thursday, backlash from the public and public officials forced the school to reverse its decision. Georgia' Department of Education requires schools to make time for the Pledge of Allegiance, but students are not required to stand or recite it. “Students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance," county superintendent Morcease J. Beasley told the Constitution-Journal. "If they choose to participate or not is their individual and constitutional right and the reason the flag of the United States of America exists. Anything that removes their right to choose to participate as their conscience dictates, in my opinion, is un-American and immoral.” 1740
A chaotic scene unfolded as a massive caravan of Honduran migrants reached the Guatemala-Mexico border Friday. What appeared to be tear gas was fired as the crowd pushed towards Mexican police at the border, CNN's Bill Weir reported from the scene."There are children in this crowd. ... This is utter chaos at the moment. You've got people with Honduran flags climbing the fences. Now we're being pushed back," Weir said.Mexican officials had said people seeking asylum would be processed at the border. But it's unclear what will happen next.Members of the group -- many with children in tow -- had cheered and chanted as they streamed toward the port of entry, with celebratory airhorns blaring. The migrant caravan is now stopped on a bridge linking the two countries as a police barricade set up by Mexico is blocking them from entering. 852

A man released on parole from prison two weeks ago stole a police SUV near Dayton, Ohio, and crashed into a minivan filled with children, killing two 6-year-old girls, police said Tuesday.Ten others were injured, including five children and the suspect. One child remained in critical condition, police said.Dayton's police chief said that 32-year-old Raymond Walters was driving at nearly 100 mph (161 kph) in the stolen police cruiser through the city's downtown Monday night when he ran a red light and hit two vehicles. The family in the minivan had just stopped at a library and was leaving when Walters slammed into them, police said. Six of those inside the minivan were from the same family and the other child was a relative, police said.A coroner identified the two who died as Eleanor McBride, of Huber Heights, and Penelope Jasko, of Dayton. They were cousins, the family's priest told the Dayton Daily News.It all started when Walters stabbed his father and then took off in his father's pickup truck, said Police Chief Richard Biehl.Walters' father was driving him to a hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation and when he found out he attacked his father, Biehl said.Soon after driving off, Walters crashed in the neighboring suburb of Riverside and then he jumped into a Riverside police SUV that had responded to the crash, police said. The officer had not known about the stabbing and had no reason to suspect that Walters might try to flee, said Riverside Police Chief Frank Robinson. The officer had used a stun gun while trying to get Walters out of the cruiser, Robinson said.Dashcam video showed Walters driving backwards in the stolen cruiser and ramming into another Riverside cruiser before driving away.Police in Dayton were looking for Walters, but they were not chasing him when he crashed downtown, Biehl said. The impact split the stolen cruiser into several large pieces.Police will pursue murder charges against Walters, who was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday, Beihl said. His father, who had wounds to the head, arms, face and chest, also was in stable condition.State prison records show Walters served about two years for robbery before he was paroled on Aug. 10. 2220
