WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that he’s optimistic that the United States will have millions of coronavirus vaccines ready by the end of the year. “By the beginning of 2021, we hope to have a couple of hundred million doses,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Fauci made the comment during an interview with the American Medical Association and added that there are four or five trials underway for vaccine candidates to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci also said Phase III trials for a vaccine candidate developed by Moderna are expected to start in early July and another candidate from AstraZeneca is proceeding on a similar track. "I'm cautiously optimistic that with the multiple candidates that we have with different platforms, that we're going to have a vaccine that shows a degree of efficacy that would make it deployable," said Fauci. 987
Under a strong security presence, this remote farming community prepared to hold the first funerals Thursday for some of the nine American women and children killed by drug cartel gunmen.Dozens of high-riding pickups and SUVS, many with U.S. license plates from as far away as North Dakota, bumped across dirt and rock roads over desert, arid grasslands and pine-covered mountains Wednesday as night fell on this community of about 300 people. Many of the residents are dual U.S. and Mexican citizens who consider themselves Mormon but are not affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At least 1,000 visitors were expected to bunk down in the hamlet overnight ahead of Thursday’s funerals, filling floor space in the 30 or so homes or sleeping in tents they brought with them. At least one cow was slaughtered to help feed the masses, as well as the few dozen Mexican soldiers guarding the entrance to La Mora.Steven Langford, who was mayor of La Mora from 2015 to 2018, said he expected the killings to have a “major” impact on the community. Once upon a time he didn’t think about moving around the area in the middle of night, but in the last 10 to 15 years things “got worse and worse and worse.” As many as half of the residents could move away, he feared.“It was a massacre, 100% a massacre,” said Langford, whose sister Christina Langford was one of the women killed. “I don’t know how it squares with the conscience of someone to do something so horrible.”When 1504
VOLKMARSEN, Germany (AP) — Police in Germany say several people have been injured after a car drove into a crowd at a Carnival procession. Northern Hesse police said a large number of police are at the scene in Volkmarsen, about 175 miles southwest of Berlin, and the driver was arrested. Police said they couldn't immediately provide further details and urged people not to spread “unconfirmed reports" about the incident, which happened early Monday afternoon. Police say they have not received any reports of any deaths, and don't have a specific number of injuries yet. They say it is too early to say what caused the car to crash into the crowd. 662
