SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of Brightwood employees have sued the for-profit’s parent company, alleging they did not receive the legally required 60-days notice before the school abruptly shut down Wednesday. The suit, filed in Delaware, location of Educational Corporation of America, says the company violated the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. In California, failing to do so requires back pay, medical expenses, and a civil penalty of 0 a day.Brightwood shut down Wednesday after it lost an accreditation, amid strict new requirements from the Department of Education.RELATED:Brightwood College layoffs may have violated state lawBrightwood College announces sudden closure amid accreditation, financial turmoil“We are assessing what the next step of the company is going to be, many believe there is going to be a bankruptcy filing,” said Jack Raisner, the attorney representing the former workers. Meanwhile, students in San Diego are still seeking answers as to what’s next. They came to the Brightwood campus on Balboa Avenue en masse on Friday for an impromptu meeting with at least one administrator and officials from two visiting colleges. Media was not allowed in.“It sounds credible, but again it’s still all in the works,” said Brian Wentz, a licensed vocational nursing student. “We still need to meet with the financial advisers and feel what’s going on, how everything’s going to transfer, it’s still pretty new to all of us.”Under state law, the students are entitled to request a transfer and/or tuition reimbursement, the latter could require giving up credits already earned. 1626

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-area pet stores were cited over the weekend for selling puppies in defiance of a prior cease-and-desist order, an animal welfare agency announced Monday.Broadway Puppies in Escondido and Pups & Pets in Santee received citations from the San Diego Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement department on Saturday, three days after being ordered to suspend all sales of pets until they could prove the animals were obtained from a legitimate source, SDHS officials reported.Approved suppliers include a public animal control agency or shelter, a facility run by a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, a humane society shelter, or a rescue group that is in a cooperative agreement with at least one private or public shelter.Broadway Puppies was cited on four counts of allegedly violating California's ban on retail sales of dogs, cats and rabbits, and Pups & Pets got citations for two instances of the same offense, according to the Humane Society. 1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member and other community leaders went door-to-door knocking on homes to create a conversation about gang violence.Bishop Cornelius Bowser is a former Crips gang member. He saw his best friend get killed in a park in Logan Heights when he was 22 years old. That’s why he’s going around from house to house talking to people who live in the gang “hot-spots.” Bowser says, “If you can address the needs of the community and bring resources into the community and help empower them, you can bring crime rates down.”He says starting a conversation creates a bond and people are more willing to talk if they know you. During their walk, they learned that underage kids are drinking at the park after dark and stolen cars are showing up on Marcy Avenue. Now they will take that information to the police.Bowser also goes to a crime scene and the hospital after a shooting to be there for the victim and the family.Bowser and his team were also handing out resources like phone numbers, upcoming community events, and information on locking up guns to protect kids from accidental shootings.Liliana Hernandez is one resident who opened her door for Bishop Bowser. She saw two killings on her street last year and is very grateful for their support. Hernandez says, “I always try to find ways as to what’s going on in the community and sometimes I’m just lost.”Tracy Swafford lost her 17-year-old daughter to a drive-by gang shooting ten years ago. She walks and knocks on doors, too. Swafford says, “It is important because it lets the people know we are here for them.”There is a community meeting Tuesday, April 16th at 6:30 at Logan Heights Library. They will be discussing the AB 392 “use-of-force” bill that will hold law enforcement accountable if they are found criminally negligent in an officer-involved shooting. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Even the MCAS Miramar Airshow, one the county's largest single day events, couldn't escape the impact of COVID-19.As the fight with the pandemic continues resulting in the cancellation of numerous activities and events in San Diego, producers of the MCAS Miramar Airshow set out to bring fans the exciting visuals from everyone's favorite military and civilian performers. "We capture our airshow tradition's exciting spirit with new storytelling that brings you a side of these aviators that you would otherwise not get at the full airshow," said Capt. Matthew 'Red Bull' Gregory, Director of Communication at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Cameras will take viewers behind the scenes and up in the air to capture the drama that happens over the skies of San Diego."It is a unique video for a unique time," he said. The show will also bring viewers up close to the event's biggest draw, the Marine Air Ground Task Force Demonstration, or MAGTF, a combined cooperation between tanks and infantry and aviation assets."We have an epic show bringing back some of your favorites – Jon Melby, Vicki Benzing, Aaron Fitzgerald, and the Red Bull Helo - as well as highlighting what makes Marine aviation some of the best in the world," said Gregory. It's only the third time the show has had to shut down since the Marine Corp. took over the base in 1997.The show will be broadcast Saturday, October 17 at 11 A.M. on the ABC 10News Facebook page, on 10News.com and apps, and the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Facebook page. 1853
